Welcome to the SustainLane
Newsletter. We've devoted this edition to a topic close
to everybody's stomach: Food. The choices you make
when eating and drinking do matter-as one of our
users, reviewing Numi Tea, suggests.
Why are so many foods at the supermarket packed
with corn-based sugars? This edition's news links
will explain. What else? Well, hamburgers sing a
show tune in the latest episode of The Unsustainables, The Vegetarian Makeover,
and we report back on our trip to the Chicago Green
Festival. Read on . . .

Check out Ken B.'s five star
review of Numi Tea, a company
far along the path toward being environmentally
responsible, and intent on making products that don't
just taste great but are good for you. (Green tea, as
many of you know, is packed with antioxidants.)
Best Tea Around...for you
and the planet
"Numi brand tea is one
of the best tea brands that I have used. Numi is a fair-
trade tea company, with a taste that is rivaled by no
other brand. From black to red to green to white, you
cannot go wrong with any Numi tea. My personal
favorite is the Numi Jasmine Green
Tea. Numi comes in both hot and iced varieties. If
you are looking for a tea that is good for the planet,
and good for you, with a taste that is second to none,
try Numi tea...any Numi tea, and you'll never drink
anything else!"

How and what we eat affects our bodies as well as
our environment--just as how we treat our
environment affects our food. The movement toward
local and organic foods has picked up significant
steam in recent years, with artisan producers popping
up across the country (check out our directory for
folks near you). These headlines reflect some of the
latest issues that may not be top of mind when you fill
your plate-but affect what's on it.
You
Are What You Grow--Noted author Michael Pollan
discusses the effects of the Farm Bill on our health
and on our environment (and explains why corn
shows up in so many of our foods).
Perchlorate in
Nation's Milk Supply--Why is a main ingredient in
rocket fuel showing up in the nation milk supply?
Cutting Emissions at
the Dinner Table--California restaurant chain
rolls out plan to reduce waste--carbon waste, that is.

For a more nutritious and natural sweetener in your
baked goods, SustainLane staffer, Abendigo R.
gives Plantation Organic
Blackstrap Molasses 5 stars.
If I'm going to be cooking with molasses, chances are
I'll use organic Plantation Blackstrap.
So many molasses brands out there are like cough
syrup and loaded with artificial sweeteners. Not this
stuff. I guess blackstrap comes from the third and final
pressing of the sugar cane, basically the bottom of the
barrel if you know what I mean, and you get this rich,
bitter, thick, mineral-rich wonder that's a great source
of iron and calcium. I love this brand. It's also un-
sulfured which means it's lighter and cleaner
regarding its sugar-cane overtones.
Tell us
about your favorite healthy alternative.
