Edition 49
Greetings!

Summer. Whether you're in grade school or retired, there is something about that one magic word that conjures images of beaches, campgrounds, sun, and smiles.

With the earth heating up and gas prices soaring, taking a summer vacation requires more thought than it did in the past. Check out what Sustainlaners are doing to make sure their summer trips don't break the bank or the ozone layer.

Kate C. prefers Amtrak to other forms of transportation, Toni P. says AAA members should get onboard with Better World Club, Abendigo R. researches the green cred of cities before he visits them with the SustainLane City Rankings Guide, and our CEO James E. suggests a great eco-destination for those who haven't made plans yet.

Check out RezHub, the most comprehensive green travel website in existence, in our Green Video of the Week, and read up on all the latest sustainable travel news in our In the News section.

Featured Review: Amtrak
Amtrack
Planes are huge polluters, and with recent airline bankruptcies you're not even guaranteed to get where you're going. Cars are convenient, but gas is expensive, and so is putting all those miles on the family vehicle. See why Kate C. thinks trains are the transportation solution of the future.

Back to the Future

Kate C.Four Stars
"I grew up riding the train - to Chicago and the west coast and LOVED it. I was so sad to see train travel diminish as I grew into adulthood, but now I am a grandmother and have just taken a train trip with a grandson to Chicago and it's even better than it was when I was a kid. The seats are big - way more room than an airplane, the...." click here to read more

Featured Business: Better World Club
Better World Club
AAA spends almost as much money lobbying against public transit and pollution laws as it does bailing out stranded drivers (for more info on AAA click here). Read on to see why Toni P. says Better World Club is just plain better.

Better World vs. AAAFour Stars

I was a AAA member for many years, despite my growing discomfort with that organization's stances on environmental issues, because I didn't know there was an alternative. A little over a year ago I found Better World Club and immediately switched! Last summer I had a car problem: on a Sunday morning, in a small town in southern West Virginia! To my great surprise and delight..." click here to read more

Staff Pick:Kaikoura New Zealand
Kaikoura New Zealand Here at SustainLane we'd never recommend burning up jet fuel to get to an eco-location, but if you ever find yourself on the other side of the world, James E. highly recommends you stop by the spectacular eco-travel destination of Kaikoura New Zealand.

Eco Travel City Risen From The Ashes

Five Stars

James E.

"Around 20 years ago the small city of Kaikoura, located on the beautiful east coast of the South Island of New Zealand was in ruins... After whaling was outlawed in the region, the city of Kaikoura was left financially depressed, and the decaying buildings and declining local population foreshadowed the end of this coastal town. What happened next was amazing. Several of the local Maori people (New Zealand's indigenous population) had an idea to...." click here to read more
