Eat For Healthy Skin and Hair
|
The old adage you are what you eat not only applies to overall
health, but to the health of our skin as well. As the largest organ in our bodies, our skin needs specific nutrients to keep it healthy and happy during the summer onslaught of sun, sand and chlorine. Some big ones:
Vitamin A Vitamin A helps keep our skin healthy and acne free. Good sources of Vitamin A include carrots, spinach and low fat dairy products.
Antioxidants The same chemicals that help destroy the free radicals in our body leading to better overall health are needed to destroy the free radicals attacking our skin. Good sources of antioxidants include blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and chocolate.
Essential Fatty Acids or EFAs EFAs are responsible for healthy cell membranes which
act as barriers to harmful invaders and as the passageway
for nutrients and waste products. Good sources for EFAs include Salmon, Canola, and Flax and Hemp seeds.
Lycopene Turns out tomatoes are even better for you than we thought. New studies show that in addition to eliminating free radicals from the body, lycopene acts as a natural sunscreen. It only counts as an SPF 3, but that's plenty if you are not in direct sunlight.
Green Tea The benefits of green tea to skin health are unparalleled. It eliminates free radicals, has anti-inflammatory properties, and helps rejuvenate cell membranes. For a full list of it's benefits, click here.
Water The simplest remedies are often the best. Before you do anything else, stay hydrated. Water helps your skin stay soft and moves waste in and out of your cells more efficiently.
