Greetings!
Debate seems to be the word of the day. For many of us, it's also a fact of
life. Openly start a new health kick or share a word about your latest energy-efficiency plan, and you'll come across a hundred different opinions. So
as our nation's policies are debated in front of a national
audience, our lifestyle policies are debated in front of the
coffee machine...and on SustainLane.com. Carrying
your water in a safe container? We've got some mixed reactions on SIGG water bottles. We may love Trader Joe's food, but some
people have arguments about their packaging policies. And finally, a new take on
the blessing (or curse) of Wal-Mart.

Featured Product: SIGG Water Bottles |
When we recommended SIGG water bottles a few weeks
back, our review was met with mixed reactions. Most folks love their SIGGs, but
a few concerned SustainLane users pointed out that
SIGG has been tight-lipped about materials used
in the bottle's interior lining. Check out the debate: Very Close to
Perfect "Cool graphics, recyclable at the end of it's useful life, made in Europe
which has high environmental standards, rather than China which has low
standards, lining is tested as inert. There is a lot to like about Sigg. . ." click to read more-
Kirsten F. Better Options "After researching
the various water bottle choices I finally decided Klean Kanteen was the safest
choice for me and the planet. . .ultimately my concerns about the dubious
lining, that it's not dishwasher safe, and that it dents easily. . ." click to read more- Stephanie P.Blog about it at SustainLane.com!

Featured Business: Trader Joe's
|
Sure, Trader Joe's is well-loved for its
reasonable prices, quality food, and customer
service, but will our obsession with baked artichoke dip and veggie gyoza
distract us from poor environmental
practices? Some nod emphatically (their mouths are full). Others are
ready to jump ship. See why...

Trader Joe's is a packaging nightmare!
"Yeah, they have awesome food. But they are
a plastic packaging nightmare. It's almost impossible to find anything at Trader
Joe's that's not packaged in plastic. They will tell you that they use
biodegradable PLA, but..." click to read more

Third Party Verification Systems
|
An easy way to decide if a product is green or not is to check the labels
on the package. Be careful though: eco-friendly product claims not verified by a third party may be misleading.
For instance, a snack " made with all-natural
ingredients" will often contain a few all-natural ingredients and plenty
of artificial colors and preservatives too. To be sure you're getting a
green deal, research products beforehand or look for reputable third-party certification
logos. For a guide to the most comprehensive third-party assessors, read on. . .

| Osaka Greener than Hiroshima? |
Think our U.S. City Rankings are pretty neat? Apparently other countries do too. Government leaders in Japan liked the idea so much that they contacted us to help them rank Japanese cities the same way we ranked ours! Watch for the first bi-annual Japanese City Rankings to premier at the Tokyo Green Festival in 2009.
