Local, Seasonal Produce |
From tart cranberries to earthy green beans, all the old Thanksgiving standards are fall harvest foods, already in season. And seasonal food is cheaper - it's the law of supply and demand in action. More good news: locally grown foods don't require much energy to reach your table. But which ones are grown locally? If you don't know, hit the farmer's market - and feel free to improvise or create new traditional dishes. One word to the wise: Don't forget the greens! They're loaded with vitamins and require no cooking. Want to show off your prized squash or rhubarb? Show us on SustainLane.com!

So Many Proteins, So Little Time
|
On the protein front, meat is one way to go, but it can be expensive. If you need to buy meat for a recipe, make sure you're getting the right cut. No need to pay a premium for filet mignon on Taco Tuesday.
To get the most from your proteins, variety is key. Consider adding tofu, tempeh, or quinoa to your menu. Nature's wonder food - eggs - are easy to cook, loaded with good stuff, and their versatility is off the charts.

Bulking Up
|
How about cutting down on unnecessary packaging? Bulk up! Buying bulk foods gives you more control over your cost and quantity, while going nearly waste-free. Bulk foods tend to be purer than the stuff in boxes, like rice mixes which may contain added salt, MSG or preservatives.

365 Degrees of Whole Foods
|
Our own Diana Budds knows firsthand that buying organic food can be a "Whole Paycheck" venture, so when she heard her local Whole Foods' offered a free "Frugal Shopping" tour, she made a beeline for the store. What did she learn? For starters, it's smart to buy store-brand items -- but how can you be sure you're getting sustainably produced, organic goods? First, consider the reputation of the supermarket. Then compare by price. At some chains, you know you're in good hands. Others may cut corners. Do your research and use your best judgment. Diana discovered that Whole Foods' 365 brand prices are mostly on par with standard supermarket prices. For more frugal tips, check out the story. Know a great store-brand product to recommend?
