SustainLane Weekly Green
January 2009
Edition 90

Greetings!

If there's one thing that Americans love more than Superbowl Sunday, it's tracking the tumultuous lives of celebrities. And no celeb's rise, fall, and subsequent rise captivates more than the ex-Mrs. Federline herself, Britney Spears.

So we asked ourselves: what if the world's favorite pop star went green? Would America embrace her green habits just as much as her small-dog-toting-Escalade-driving-head-shaving ways?

To answer this question, we envisioned a green superbowl bash worthy of America's pop princess all the way from invitations to clean-up, with plenty of eats and drinks along the way. So place your bets, and get ready for the kick off!

Dishware If Britney were green, she'd be a slave for waste reduction. And if she didn't have enough dishware and utensils for all her friends at her party, plastic would not be her only option. Many SustainLane members recommend compostable dinnerware for big events.

EatsWinning Superbowl Snacks
Chips and SalsaIn our green fantasy, Britney would ditch the standard trans-fat laden chips and packaged dips for these SustainLane favorites. Taste and healthfulness go hand-in-hand with these winning snacks:

Rehan I.Rehan I. on Kettle's Organic Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips: "Once you start, you can't stop. These possess a disturbingly addictive quality."

Pamela P.Pamela P. on Jordana G.'s Recipe for Delicious Organic Salsa: "Tried it loved it will make it again! I usually do a raw salsa!"

Valerie B.Valerie B. on Organic Valley's Raw, Sharp Cheddar Cheese: "It's got great classic sharp cheddar taste, a mildly yellow complexion (aka not dyed orange) and it's organic."

Susie S.Susie S. on Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free Crackers:
"I'm happy to know about Mary's Gone Crackers - the crunchiest most fun and delicious crackers I've ever had."

Crystal S. says Mr. Krisper's Sour Cream and Onion Baked Rice Krisps are "better than potato chips."

Kate S.'s hummus recipe is very versatile. Use it as a dip for chips and crudits, or as a spread for pita bread.

BettingPoolBritney's Betting Pool
Britney SpearsMost Superbowl parties have a betting pool, and Britney's would be no exception. But what would a green Britney give out to the winners? A couple ideas, courtesy of the SustainLane community:

A first-rate prize for first place:
Tesla's zippy electric roadster would go to the lucky winner.

Channel your inner pop-star:
Why play Guitar Hero when you could have a handmade hemp guitar?

Music to our ears:
Britney would upload all her hits to a green iPod for whoever placed third.

All about acai:
Placing fourth isn't bad if it means getting a year's supply of anti-oxidant rich acai juice.

Gifts for all:
Britney would make sure everyone didn't leave empty handed and would give Solio's sleek portable solar charger as a parting gift.
