100 Mile Diet: Local Eating For Global Change
Description: "From reviving the family farm to reconnecting with the seasons, the local foods movement is turning good eating into a revolution."
100 miles for global change
Wow, imagine eating only foods sourced within 100 miles of your home. That is the localvore challenge. A couple in Vancouver started this year long experiment in 2005. It sounds severe and difficult after it took them 7 months to find a wheat farmer. Perhaps an easier challenge is to use a larger radius and plan ahead or as they suggest, start with one large meal for family and friends, and it's now a perfect season for that. Join their 100-Mile Thanksgiving campaign. http://100milediet.org/thanksgiving-spread-the-word/ That should make everyone appreciate the fossil fuels burned for every piece of fruit and produce shipped in from distant lands.
I would like to try localvore eating, and feel confident knowing I have Angelic Organics CSA within our state borders. I've heard of a source for raw milk and cheese and also can order organic meat and poultry from a farm in Indiana. So I know Chicagoans would fare rather well with this challenge.
