I found out about TerraCycle as an environmental activist. I love their start-up story and want to support them by using their plant food product. Which is timely, because I just finished up the very last of my Miracle-Gro. Did you know that Terracycle is being sued by Scotts-Miracle Gro! To get information about the lawsuit against TerraCycle, and what you can do, simple go to their homepage. Worm POOP ON YOU Scotts!

I just read that Terracycle settled the lawsuit under some very strange conditions. They agreed to change the colors on their label (I will admit, there product label did look pretty similar to MiracleGro), but they also agreed to stop using the independent tests in their advertising that showed that Terracycle is more effective than MiracleGro, and to take down the website Terracycle put up detailing the MiracleGro lawsuit. Here is the source for these things by the way - http://www.sustainableisgood.com/blog/2007/09/scotts-and-terr.html
Looks to me like one of two things happened. 1 - Terracycle was using bad studies in their advertising. This is certainly a possibility, but I have seen nothing to suggest it. 2 - MiracleGro is a really shady company that used its large budget and legal power to stifle a competitor.
My personal opinion is that the answer is situation 2, and we should all be outraged. Buy Terracycle - Boycott MiracleGro!

Thanks for the update Adam - I hadn't heard the outcome, but reading about the dilemma at the time it was clear to me that it was a case of situation #2. And, I've boycotted Miracle-Gro ever since!
