Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
Description: Book by Barbara Kingsolver.
Another great Kingsolver book
She doesn't know it, but I think Barbara Kingsolver and I are kindred spirits. I love her novels, and her non-fiction speaks to me very deeply. This book is no different. It's a chronicle of one year when she and her family tried to only eat things that were local to them. Not trying to be perfect, I'd say they succeeded.
She chronicles the cycles of her garden, food preservation, making bread, cheese, buying at the farmers market, splurging on Italian wines, raising heritage turkeys, and helping daughter Lily raise chickens for an egg selling business.
At the end of this book, I wanted her life to be my life. So I guess it's something to aim for. But I think anyone will love this book if they are interested in local food living, gardening, or food in general. Her daughter Camille finishes each chapter with a short essay and some recipes from their Local Food year. Her husband Stephen contributes short insets about food issues too. I was sad to finish it.
