Hi Jared - how does this tie into green/healthy/sustainable?
Jared B. says:
In response to Jenn A.:
Thanks for asking Jenn. I always show students how to maximize their camera, printer and computer for the best possible results. I encourage people to print online instead of buying lots of papers and inks for their home computers. Home printing is very expensive and wasteful, plus the inks are toxic for the environment. I encourage people to share more online instead of printing photos (costly paper + inks) and show them how to do that effectively. Digital photography is an amazing way to share your perspective on our world in a clean, easy manner that has mass appeal. I appreciate you asking me how my business is green and I do what I can to be sustainable in how I manage it.
Go green team,

Hi Jared - thanks for the reply - printing "online" = online photo services?
I have no argument with the value of photography (as my 14,000 photos on Flickr will attest).
Also - printing at commercial services isn't necessarily more green. Photo printing operations are at least as wasteful and bad for the environment as anything else.
Is uploading your pictures to an online service and printing them out for pick-up at Wal-Mart or Walgreens or Costco really "green"? What's the impact of supporting companies who do so much business with trading partners who do a lot of damage to the environment (ie, China)?
As an avid photographer, I haven't figured out answers to these questions myself. Just opening up the discussion!
Home printing isn't as high quality as printing in a store - to be sure. But sharing photos exclusively online isn't always an option.
Given the difficulty in determining local "green" options for photo printing, how do you teach someone how to be selective, foster judgment and an eye for a "good" picture worth the resources required to print it?
