Description: Compact kits for growing gourmet mushrooms.
My first experience with one of these mushroom kits was an unmitigated success -- I had received an oyster mushroom kit while I was living in New Orleans. It's warm and humid there, and the space on top of my refrigerator seemed to be perfect. We got 3-4 harvests off the kit by drying it out after picking the mushrooms and resoaking it after a week's rest and dry out.
Last fall I picked up a couple of kits for shitakes at Green Festival. I was so excited to share these with my boyfriend but we are not in the right area to do this in the winter. That is to say -- most houses aren't very well insulated here and neither of us has heat in our apartments (I know? Criminal is what I call it!). Both my boyfriend and I live in 80+ year old buildings that get just as cold inside as outside in the winter -- well below the 50-80 degree range for growing shitake kits.
After a non-start last December/January, I let my kit dry out and resoaked it last weekend -- I already have three shitakes popping up -- but I'm worried that it is still a bit too cool in my home (a duplex), fingers x'd! Boyfriend's kit just got moldy and didn't do anything. :(
It's a great product -- the Bay Area is just too cold for indoor mushroom kits in the winter. Their customer service is great -- and since I had two kits from the same batch, they're a bit suspect. Their customer service -- Critter -- promised me some replacements so I will post pictures of my success and update this review.
