Stick with a simple system
If you decide to use cloth diapers for your baby and do an on-line search for them, you'll quickly be inundated by all the choices - all-in-ones, fuzzi-bunz, wraps, pins, snaps etc. Some of these cloth diapering mamas are fanatics!
For the money and simplicity, stick with simple Chinese Pre-folds (CPFs) and a cover with velcro.
I guess they're from China, which is why they're called "Chinese" prefolds, and compared to the diapers of your mom's day, they're already prefolded, with a thicker strip in the middle. Fold one of these into thirds and place it in the cover and you're good to go.
You're going to be using anywhere from 8 to 14 of these things a day, and your kid's peeing and pooping in them, so keep it simple and cheap. You can get a dozen of these for around $20, more if you want organic cotton. Why spend $8 or more for one single diaper?
Washing them yourself is also easy, but takes planning: soak them overnight with some baking soda, then wash them on hot and throw them in the dryer. (You need the heat to kill off any germs). If you have any spots, lay them in the sun to bleach out.
I've used the same 3 dozen for both my kids and these diapers would probably be good for 2 more kids, if we were so inclined.
