A frozen epiphany!

A new product caught my eye last night -- "Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss" ice creams were lined up in the frozen case at Whole Foods, calling my name. "Dark Chocolate Hazelnut" is the most rich, creamy chocolate ice cream I have ever had. There's more intense chocolate flavor than in dairy-based ice creams -- and it's rich and satisfying.

In my pregan days (that is, before I cut out dairy), I was a huge fan of Cherry Garcia. I saw "Cherry Amaretto" - and after reading the label to see that it was both soy and dairy-free, I had to exercise great restraint to only buy one pint.

Amaretto Cherry has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel without being coating and fatty like regular ice cream. There are whole dark cherry pieces and a delicious light almond taste. I can't taste coconut in it (fresh coconut milk isn't very strong). I can't wait to try the other flavors!

These products aren't just good - they are astonishingly good. This is the best ice cream I have ever had of any kind (even gelato). Admittedly, it's hard to go wrong with coconut milk.

Coconut Bliss has no added fats and uses no processed sugar. The Amarettto Cherry is 191 calories per 1/2 cup serving so try to make it last (and no, the boyfriend's freezer is not helpful for that exercise). Though coconut fat is basically good for you - that's still a lot of calories.

From the website: "the fat in coconut milk is very different from other fats. High in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) identical to those in human breast milk, coconut milk has similar germ fighting and heart-protective properties.

Unlike other fats, MCTs do not need to be broken down and can be used immediately by the body as energy; it's the ideal fat for people who commonly have trouble digesting fat, such as those with a slow metabolism, colitis, and hypothyroidism. Coconut fat actually stimulates metabolism."

So - there you have it - all organic, non-dairy and good for you. Buen provecho!
