Detoxifying Leeches

Description: Using leeches as a part of a detox/cleansing regimen

Go Medieval on your bellybutton!

I just read this article on the BBC, and I am sure some of you out there saw this in it's original format on the Letterman show - do people still really do this? Demi Moore claims she used leeches to suck her blood as part of a detox process she underwent in Australia. I have heard of using ancient tribal medicines (in fact, I am a huge fan) but medieval times is not really what i consider an "enlightened age" of medicine. She strikes me as going a little over the line. Can someone please write in and tell me why anyone would do this? I am open, I just don't think Demi was the best spokesperson for this practice...

Without being completely sure I want to know the answer - where do you get the leeches? Are they expensive? Do you take them back when they're full? Can they live in a jar in the refrigerator or do you need a leech cage? I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the concept...

According to the article, the leeches Demi used were not "just swamp leeches" but "highly trained medical leeches" (I can only hope she was joking). I really don't know the answer that question, and i think I agree that i don't think I want to.
