Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) has finally created a rating system for homes! This rating system can help you create a green home, by utilizing their checklist. Green homes use less energy, water and natural resources, create less waste, and are healthier and more comfortable for their occupants. You can save money by reducing your energy and water bills. You will reduce your carbon footprint by lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and breathe healthier air by having less exposure to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins. The great news is that the net cost of owning a LEED home is comparable to that of owning a conventional home. I encourage everyone who is building, rehabbing or just wants to make some small improvements in their home, to use this checklist to help you make selections and decisions. You don't need to certify your house or struggle with the paperwork if you find it cumbersome, just use their tools to help you create a healthier home, and don't forget the resale value of a green and energy efficient house.
