Local Harvest is Santa Cruz based directory that provides a tremendous resource. It is a "living" public, nationwide directory of small farms, farmers markets, CSAs and other local food sources.
The site has a great search capability that allows you to search for a huge variety of locally produced food available near you.
Why buy local? There are many reasons -- first, you deserve to know what is in your food. If you buy locally, you can ask the person growing the food "Are there any pesticides?" or "How are the strawberries this year?" -- they actually know. Buying locally produced organic/sustainable food not only cuts down on the pesticides and chemicals on our planet and in your body but it reduces the amount of fuel and energy expended to ship the food around the globe. Do you really need grapes from Chile in December?
Locally grown produce is more flavorful and healthier for you -- it's all around a better, more green way to live. Yum!
