Nomad Cafe, fair trade in North Oakland
The Nomad Cafe at 65th and Shattuck in north Oakland is my favorite green East Bay cafe. They've got a wall full of environmental awards, and have been working with the city to develop programs to green other cafes. A few days ago they had a speaker come in to talk about Fair Trade. They have fair trade coffee, organic beer; soy substitutes don't cost extra, fruit juice smoothies, a reasonable selection of vegan cafe food. Free wireless, and a good community... There are a host of green projects going on quietly on any given day: it's my office for Space Share carpooling, you might sit next to someone working on the Urban Alliance for Sustainability website or a youth environmental-journalism project.
