Don't get me wrong - I prefer to shop at Whole Foods over Safeway or any other big chain. They offer pretty good produce and organic bulk and packaged foods. A lot of big chains take flak for co-opting the term "organic" without really providing foods that are both organic AND sustainable, doing just the minimum to meet "organic" quality standards.
Keep in mind - most Whole Foods stores are not located in neighborhoods with median incomes below $50K - you hardly ever see beater cars dragging mufflers pull into Whole Foods. It's pricey - they cater to people with more money so they can really provide better, organic food.
Organic is better than not-organic, no question. Don't get completely sucked in though -- you should question how the food is produced. Just because a place produces organic food doesn't mean they treat their employees any better or use better, more natural farming methods.
Growing and canning your own tomatoes is one of the joys of life. Storing a year's worth of tomato sauce -- well, maybe that's why you pay extra to buy it in smaller quantities at places like Whole Foods.
Even though it's organic - think before you buy packaged food. Check out your local CSA -- it may sound like an expensive idea, but most CSAs offer weekly veggie/fruit boxes for $25 that are enough for two people. You can eat organic cheaply -- there are lots of options out there!
