Pretty cool, net energy gain
I have a solio myself and leave it in my home window facing south. I don't do the recommended "put a pencil in it and re-orient to the sun every ten" tip, but it charges up to full four blinks over the course of a few days. Which is when I need to charge my phone again.
Pretty cool piece of sand and petro-plastic. It may seem silly, but it's a start. I'd also recommend the similar but more cheaply made solar spotlight which is available at Target. Not that I like supporting a national chain store which doesn't reinvest in the community as much as a local store might:

I'd like to see a pedal-powered phone charger!
