I just saw a video for this product called the solar roadway. basically, some electrical engineer decided that there was no reason we couldn't become completely energy efficient on solar, so he decided to design the best way to do it. Now considering ow much physical space that would require, he decided that the best way to accomplish this is to replace all of our roads with solar panels.
Now I am not going to go into the detail of why this would work - just follow the link above on this page to his own website. What is important is that he breaks it down and it REALLY WOULD WORK. If we took this product which is made from super simple technology and completely streamlined the process to make sure this didn't get caught in red tape, we repave 90% of the entire country with these roads within 10 years for NO MORE MONEY than it would take to keep the old roads up and running anyway.
Unfortunately, it is really really really pains me to say this, this will never happen. Not because there is a problem with the technology or with implementation or with anything important. No, the problem is that no one would make money from this. All the current power companies would fight to keep this stuff down, congresspeople would not get behind this in the numbers required, unions would fight it because it would require extra training for their members and/or new members - no one would get a consensus behind it. Such a great dream - such a sad ending. The saddest part of all being that if we could all cooperate on this, it would actually be of great benefit to all the people listed above, with the possible exception of gas and coal companies.
