Comments on Susanna's review of Tom's Natural Toothpaste
Fluoride-free smile
The guy in Dr. Strangelove was right...beware of fluorinated water! As little as 0.04 mg/kg/day has been proven to cause adverse health effects, and it only accumulates in our bodies over time. We may have no choice about the fluoride in our water, so do we really need it in toothpaste too? It's great that Tom's provides a wide range of alternatives from the big mainstream brands that brag about fluoride, not presenting it as the poison it really is.
I've tried many of the flavors over the years and fennel is my favorite, with propolis + myrrh a close second. Cinnamint is bit too bracing for me, but some people may really enjoy it. I recommend steering clear of the Gingermint.

Thanks for your review Susanna, I totally agree about the whole "fluoride is good for you" campaign. A lot of people don't know that there are at least two types of fluoride, calcium fluoride, and sodium fluoride. Calcium fluoride is the one that many people use for clinical tests, and it does help protect teeth in many cases against decay. HOWEVER, 99% of the fluoride that is being added to our public water supplies is SODIUM fluoride, and they just call it "fluoride," and reference the studies done on CALCIUM fluoride, which is totally misleading. SODIUM fluoride is an industrial waste product, and some smart business person figured out how to sell it to municipalities as an "added benefit" to their town's water supply. Amazing, isn't it? In most cases the fluoride being added to toothpaste is this same waste product, which is very harmful over prolonged use...like in a water supply or in your tooth paste. If the label doesn't say whether it is calcium or sodium fluoride, use the precautionary principle, and don't buy it. You can also call the manufacturer and ask. I've done a lot of research on this topic, and it is almost impossible to take the fluoride out of our water supplies by using commercial water filters, which is a bummer. We shouldn't also have to consume this voluntarily in our purchases of products for our health.
