Powerful Powder

This is great stuff for really dirty laundry. I do a lot of hiking and mountain biking, ergo lots of sweaty horrible-smelling polyster technical clothing splattered with mud and vegetation stains. Planet Ultra Powdered Laundry Detergent does an outstanding job cleaning these athletic clothes (as well as my office clothes!).

And it is easier on the environment, too - it doesn't have all the enzymes, brighters, scents, and who-knows-what chemicals the mainstream detergents have in them. An independent lab has certified it is biodegradable, so I know it is not just marketing. Some of my family members have skin allergies, and they do fine with Planet powdered detergent. It doesn't make many suds, so I have used it in an HE (High efficiency) washer, I just use half of what they say on the box.

I've learned I should take one extra step with all powdered detergents. Dissolve it first in the wash water and let the machine agitate for a minute, then add the clothes. This prevents white marks from forming on dark clothing. Also, if there's a really bad grass stain or similar, sometimes I pre-treat a stain with their liquid laundry detergent or other. For the results Planet provides, I can happily live with this!

Hi Ellen.

How do you add clothes to a HE washer after the water has begun pouring into the washer? My washer locks the door. I've been looking for a good HE detergent to get the retained stink out of the technical clothes that regular HE detergent doesn't handle, so this seems like the stuff.

Hi Bry B,

Well that seems like it could be a problem since the door locks! However, I think most HE washers kind of dissolve the powder from the drawer where you stick it in. It is the top loaders that my comments pertain to.

However, good news for HE users: Planet recently came out with a new liquid detergent for HE washers, so it is low sudsing. It can be used in a regular washing machine, also. Since it is concentrated, you don't need as much. I tried it, and it cleans clothes just about as well as their powdered does (and even better than their old liquid laundry does.) It is called Planet 2x Ultra Laundry Detergent, HE. It is approved on many cloth diapering sites. It is still biodegradable, hypoallergenic etc. etc. I'm very happy with it.
