City dwellers have always raised basil, tomatoes and greens in containers in whatever space is available -- patios, fire escapes and window boxes. More and more folks are raising vegetables to sell to the people in their community and at Farmer's Markets.
More and more - cities are granting permission to people to use vacant lots where they build raised beds -- converting them from dump sites to urban community farms. These types of initiatives improve the quality of life in a neighborhood in many ways, bringing people together around a very strong uniting force -- FOOD!
The article provides an overview on urban farms all over the U.S. -- and now, kids in the city can grow their own tomatoes instead of imagining that they all come from the grocery store.
