Comments on Wendy's review of Vegan Cat Food
This is animal abuse. I would love to give zero stars for this cretinous idea if it were allowed.
Cats are OBLIGATE CARNIVORES. I really don't care one whit what you, the human guardian, choose to eat or not eat. Be a vegan, an omnivore, a fruitarian--Godspeed.
Anyone who knowingly chooses to feed a cat an exclusively or even primarily vegetarian or vegan diet is a cruel minded fool. This "let's ALL be vegans together" anthromorphizing attitude is a recipe for disaster.
"The Association of American Feed Control Officials has established guidelines for nutritional minimum daily requirements of cats and dogs which are recognized by pet food manufacturers. It seems that dogs can thrive on a carefully managed vegetarian diet but cats have a unique metabolism with a shorter gastrointestinal tract and lower digestibility than dogs. They require more protein along with the amino acid, taurine. Taurine deficiency will lead to blindness, neurological damage and suppressed immune function. Taurine is mainly found in animal sources but is also available in tiny amounts in some plant sources, however a synthetic taurine is used in most pet foods. The feline system is also unable to convert beta-carotene to active vitamin A, or tryptophan to niacin, or linoleic acid to essential fatty acids. This is why many veterinarians believe cats cannot live on a vegetarian diet."
"Cats being fed a high protein vegetarian diet developed recurrent episodes of polymyopathy, characterised by ventroflexion of the head and neck, stiff forelimb gait, lateral head-resting and generalised muscle weakness."
These are just two pieces from the first page of Google which I pulled so as not to have to explain this in detail myself, as I am not a veterinarian. However, I try to read and learn about what is good for my cat--common sense, right?
Making your cat a vegan is almost as crazy as the vet who wrote about a Christian Scientist who didn't take her cat in to see him until he was almost dead because of her beliefs. She thought "he shared them" too. Jesus Christ indeed.
