Ear to the Earth 2009

Some of today’s leading eco-composers, sound artists and musicians explore the topic of bio-diversity in a weekend of live concerts and sound installations.

When: Saturday, October 10

Where: map
55 Washington Square S
New York, NY 10012

What are the sounds of a healthy eco-system? How do sound artists portray natural and urban diversity? How is the erosion of bio-diversity in the natural and urban worlds affecting us and how are we addressing it? In our visually dominated era, Ear to the Earth encourages audiences to listen to our world, using sound as a tool to heighten our awareness of the environment and critical ecological issues. On the program: a unique presentation of Yoko Ono’s first musical composition, Secret Piece; the world premiere of New York soundscapes by the team of sound artists O+A (Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger), and by avant-garde composer/instrumentalist Elliott Sharp; the first N.Y. appearance of Ghanaian master drummer Nii Otoo Annan in duet with eco-musicologist Steven Feld; a riveting high-definition 3D audio portrait of primary rainforest habitats in equatorial Africa by David Monacchi from Italy; and a public symposium on bio-diversity highlighting the latest perspectives on conservation and sustainability.
