Description

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate surveys and opportunity assessments and implement funded waste minimization projects.
  • Ensure reduction of the quantity of toxic and hazardous chemicals and materials acquired, used, or disposed of.
  • Increase the diversion of solid waste as appropriate, and maintain cost-effective waste prevention and recycling programs.
  • Investigate pollution prevention (P2) topics, prepare updates to the P2 plan, and disseminate relevant information to installation stakeholders.
  • Support the Solid Waste Management Plan for Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall to assist in complying with federal, state, local regulations and Army policies.
  • Expand source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting and build on what is best and most successful in the current waste management system.
  • Assist all other Environmental Programs in performing environmental compliance.

Identify opportunities to implement sustainable practices at the installation; some examples include:

  • minimizing runoff and preserving existing path flows;
  • maintaining natural drainage divides to keep flow paths dispersed;
  • disconnecting impervious areas such as pavement and roofs from the storm drain network;
  • allowing runoff to be conveyed over pervious areas;
  • preserving the naturally vegetated areas and soil types that slow runoff, filter out pollutants, and facilitate infiltration;
  • directing runoff into or across vegetated areas to help filter runoff and encourage recharge;
  • developing composting practices and implementation of rain gardens, rain barrels and similar sustainability practices.

Qualifications:

Experience Requirements:

2-4 years experience.

Skills Requirements:

Familiarity with low-impact development, stormwater management, waste minimization and management, pollution prevention, and sustainable practices. The position requires a self-starter who can work with minimal supervision. The candidate should be creative and able to identify opportunities to implement sustainable practices throughout the installation. The candidate should have excellent communication skills, both written and oral. A desire to promote and expand the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Environmental and Sustainability Program is essential.

Education Requirement:

Bachelor's degree in environmental science, natural resource management, agronomy, environmental engineering, or related field
