NYSES is a chapter of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) founded in 1954, which is a chapter of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES). NYSES is a 501c3 presently directed by its founder and governed by its Board of Directors. NYSES advocates the use of solar, wind, and other forms of renewable energy and efficiency, offers professional training and workshops, serves to galvanize professional in the industry, and educates the public on the benefits of adopting renewable energy.
NYSES mission:
The mission of NYSES is to encourage the understanding and use of solar energy technologies through public outreach, to be a source of sound technical knowledge and to provide a forum to address critical regional and state issues relating to solar energy solutions. We address the energy usage of all segments of society by increasing awareness of the benefits of renewables: solar, wind, biomass, geothermal ground source, tidal/wave
energy and energy efficiency.
NYSES members:
Members are enthusiasts of solar, other renewable energies, and energy efficiency including engineers, developers, contractors, policymakers, teachers, researchers, analysts, economists, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, homeowners and environmental professionals.
NYSES outreach:
NYSES has a dynamic, educational and interactive exhibit to show children and families how solar energy can work for them. NYSES incorporates energy saving tips as well as information about wind, biomass, geothermal ground source heat, tidal and wave energy. NYSES educates consumers to help them know how to choose cost effective, energy solutions with NYSES Homeowner Workshops, K-12 special events, solar demonstrations with hands-on workshops, renewable energy finance seminars and email newsletters.
Position Overview:
NYSES is seeking an Executive Director with a vision to grow the organization to where it can have more paid staff and a robust fundraising operation. Experience with capital campaigns highly valued. Must be passionate about the growth of the clean energy, and education outreach in renewable energy and efficiency.
The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day general management of NYSES activities, issues and projects including the raising of funds to support staff positions. Salary is based on fundraising performance.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include directing the organization's fundraising activities, developing contacts and alliances within ISES and ASES, and with an expanding network of renewable energy organizations and innovators, developing and working with volunteers and the membership, and participating in planning activities with the Board. The Executive Director is supervised directly by the Chairman of the Board and Board Members. The Executive Director will supervise and coordinate staff, volunteers and interns.
The Executive Director will participate in NYSES' monthly Board Meetings by phone or in person, special events and panels, quarterly membership meetings, publications, nyses.org website maintenance, newsletter when issues are pressing, educational workshops and a wide range of outreach activities including solar installation workshops.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Issues and Project Management:
The Executive Director is responsible for the management of NYSES' policy and project agenda, developing press releases and position papers, monitoring activities of local government entities, developing and implementing NYSES projects and programming. Some examples of representation include attending conferences and conference calls, meetings with the Board, ASES Chapter Caucus and ASES Annual Conference and, when funding allows, ISES.
The Executive Director will also be responsible for operating NYSES'
electronic systems, whether individual or with interns, staff and volunteers, Examples of these systems include but are not restricted to maintaining data bases such as membership registration list and membership renewal, contacts, events. Workshops registrar, and general financial and management data bases.
- Public Affairs and Communications:
The Executive Director will be the primary spokesperson for NYSES. He/She will promote communication with a variety of groups and individuals, provide accurate and timely information about NYSES's work and press and the general public and maintain the highest level of professionalism in NYSES's relationships will all people and organizations.
The Executive Director will furnish materials and contribute content
to the NYSES website, newsletter as well as other relevant publications.
- Membership:
Members are the lifeblood of the organization and keeping members informed and involved is a key task of the Executive Director. He/She will assist in recruiting and retaining NYSES members, especially in business categories. The Executive Director will manage the NYSES members services, and work with the Membership Committee when one is formed.
- Fundraising:
The Executive Director will assist the Board of Directors to raise funds
for NYSES programs and operations through preparation of proposals to foundations, individuals, governments and corporations, campaigns to members and potential members, and design and organization of other special fundraising events. The Executive Director will help to ensure that primary NYSES activities such as education workshops and other events are a significant revenue sources as well as programming successes.
- Other Duties as Required:
The Executive Director will have responsibility for other activities as they arise. Flexibility and openness to new tasks are important.
Qualifications:
- Proven fundraising abilities, creative ability, aptitude for innovation and strategic thinking to find new solutions, methods and approaches to create projects and activities that achieve the mission of NYSES.
- Time management skills: Ability to keep a number of activities moving forward simultaneously. Demonstrate or acquire knowledge and understanding of strategic, technical and regulatory issues related to solar thermal and photovoltaic energy, wind power and other forms of renewable energy and efficiency. Ability to analyze issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and to develop strategies and innovative solutions.
- Communication ability: Well-developed interpersonal, speaking and writing skills including conference speaking and presentation. These skills will translate in personal and public events, including media interviews, testimony, speaker positions and published writings.
- People skills: Ability to meet constructively and work with a variety of members, volunteers, the general public, trade associations, advocacy groups and officials at the City, County, State and Federal levels and in a range of private sector entities. Professional demeanor, especially in the face of controversy and ability to thrive in a developing environment. Willingness to work odd hours, evenings and weekends to match schedule of community, NYSES and industry events, and volunteers. Compensation: Compensation will be made on a contractual basis with additional funds available for expense reimbursement as allocated by the NYSES Board of Directors. Compensation does not include benefits with exception to state mandates. Compensation range is fully dependent on, and subject to, fundraising success, beginning at $2500- $3500 per month, fully dependent on fundraising. No moving or relocation expenses are available. Contract will be made on a level of effort basis with benchmarks to be agreed upon and attained.
