Description
The Media Relations Manager is part of a team of skilled marketing professionals working within the Marketing Resource Center (MRC) - East. The Media Relations Manager will work with MRC staff and state, region and country program staff to develop and implement media strategies that maximize the Conservancy’s presence in target markets, develop new and existing constituencies and achieve fundraising, public policy, and conservation and science objectives. Overall, s/he will contribute to the development and implementation of strategic communications strategies, messages and materials specifically for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) partner programs served by the MRC in support of the Nature Conservancy’s three marketing objectives:
*Become the most respected organization among key audiences
*Influence local conservation activities among a broader constituency
*Increase major gifts fundraising to support conservation goals
The Media Relations Manager reports to the MRC Director, does not supervise staff, and will sometimes manage outside resources and related vendors in order to complete projects.
Responsibilities
1. Work with the MRC Director, state/regional and country program directors and other Conservancy media relations managers to develop and implement media strategies that maximize the Conservancy’s presence in targeted markets.
2. Develop and maintain strong media contacts. Initiate story placement and respond to media inquiries.
3. Advise MRC leadership and TNC partner program staff on crisis prevention and management.
4. Research, write and distribute wide variety of media materials, such as Op-eds, news releases, fact sheets and web articles as directed in program marketing plans.
5. Assist program staff in meeting conservation, fundraising and policy objectives by developing key messages and strategies that ensure these messages are delivered to target stakeholders.
6. Provide media training and consultation to partner program staff.
7. Serve as spokesperson where appropriate and approved by MRC leadership.
8. Provide public relations counsel on new and existing community-based projects and activities.
9. Participate in Conservancy networks to enhance knowledge and skills.
10. Coordinate activities with other MRC and marketing and communications staff and identify opportunities for coordination of activities between MRC staff, program partners and the Conservancy’s Worldwide Office.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Marketing, Journalism or related field and a minimum of 5 years related experience or equivalent combination.
• Experience in client and account management.
• Experience writing, editing, proofreading, and with oral communications.
• Experience with all MS Office suites functions.
Requirements, Knowledge and Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
• Five to 7 years experience with proven ability to secure strategic media placements.
• Experience in a mission-driven organization is desirable, communicating the importance of protecting or restoring lands and waters a major plus.
• Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with both clients and media representatives.
• Strong writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
• Strong time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
• Knowledge of earned media measurement tools.
• Knowledge of Associated Press writing and editing styles a plus.
• Ability to work in a team-based environment with internal and external partners.
• Ability & willingness to travel overnight and possibly internationally.
• Personal passion for preserving and protecting the natural world with a belief in the mission, principles, and values of The Nature Conservancy’s global approach to conservation.
