Position Opening: Senior Atmospheric Scientist / Wind Assessment Director
Precision Wind is expanding its global, wind resource assessment team. We are recruiting an experienced atmospheric scientist to support the fast growing market for our products and services. Precision Wind is a global leader in atmospheric modeling to produce accurate long term wind resource assessments and near-term forecasts.
Responsibilities
The Senior Atmospheric Scientist / Wind Assessment Director is responsible for leading a team of atmospheric scientists in defining and implementing Precision Wind technology and continuing to enhance the company’s modeling and scientific analysis core competencies. This position works closely with the CTO to develop and test both new and improved product / process development activities, as well as providing oversight and direction to the wind energy assessment product delivery team.
Principal Duties / Responsibilities:
The candidate will have the responsibility of developing, testing, and delivering enhanced and new wind resource assessment products. Responsibilities include:
- Leading and supervising the assessment delivery team.
- Apply expert knowledge of mesoscale/microscale, atmospheric modeling to test and implement wind resource assessment solutions.
- Develop and/or test and implement advanced data assimilation techniques for use in wind resource assessment.
- Design and/or test and implement statistical modeling for various wind assessment applications.
- Conduct and participate in needs assessments for various client projects, and work closely with clients to determine the best wind resource assessment modeling and analysis systems to implement.
- Design and/or conduct the research required to maintain and expand Precision Wind’s technical leadership in the wind energy industry. Identify new technologies to pursue and potential market opportunities for the company to consider. Serve as the project lead scientist for a variety of projects including wind assessment studies, wind integration studies, R&D projects, and validation studies.
- Stay current with the latest developments in atmospheric sciences and related fields by way of scientific journals, publications, and attending meetings.
- Present Precision Wind’s scientific developments (when appropriate) to the wind energy communities by way of presentations at conferences and seminars.
Qualifications
- Supervisory experience in either a research and development environment or a commercial lab.
- Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, or related fields.
- Minimum 8 years experience with mescoscale modeling.
- Minimum 8 years experience in data analysis, physics-based and statistical modeling applied to real world problems.
- Experience with advanced data assimilation methods (e.g., ensemble methods, variational methods).
- Familiarity with the latest modeling techniques and tools. Successful track record in defining and implementing new solutions in software and strong problem solving skills.
- Working knowledge of UNIX, Linux, Windows and various programming languages (e.g., FORTRAN, C, C++).
- Must have excellent communication skills, including strong written and oral abilities and have a pleasant disposition with interpersonal relations.
- Experience in writing successful proposals and publishing / presenting scientific findings.
- Working knowledge of software modeling architecture and algorithm development as well as the emerging applications within the geosciences.
- Must be independent, self-motivated, self-managed person with ability to focus on multiple projects and activities simultaneously. Motivated by high-quality contribution to a fast growing company. Able to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- The ideal candidate must possess a keen eye for detail, strong project management skills, exceptional communication skills, and be able to manage priorities effectively and with little oversight. This position is a highly visible one and will require working with colleagues, consultants, and clients in an effective and professional manner.
- Preference for candidates with wind industry experience.
