Join the dynamic staff of The Horticultural Society of New York! HSNY is seeking a teaching intern to bring our exciting hands-on curriculum to elementary students in NYC for a whole school year-- starting October 2009 until June 2010.

Apple Seed is a fun, plant-based curriculum with a comprehensive approach to applied science, artistic expression and literacy. Our teaching intern will become a weekly science "treat" with 1st -4th graders as they visit classroom and garden spaces. Activites include dissecting flowers, releasing ladybugs, planting tulips, weeding, identifying street trees and creating plant based art.

This is a great opportunity for an organized and self-motivated individual, with superior communication and educational skills. Teaching interns work together with our TEaching Fellows & the Director of Children's Education to develop their skills and create new lessons.

Responsibilities
Essential duties include:
• Instructing elementary students during and after school
• Organizing, obtaining and delivering planting and teaching materials for each lesson
• Creating innovative, new activities and games for our curriculum
• Engaging, mobilizing and collaborating with school staff
• Participating in weekly updates

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Teaching experience in a school, camp, after school, child care or organized facility
• Bachelors degree in education, environmental studies, horticulture, botany or biology
• Strong science, gardening or environmental education skills
• Self-starter who can manipulate through the NYC subway system
• Sound organizational, communication and inter-personal skills
• Spanish speakers preferred
