Description
Argonne National Laboratory, a renowned R&D institution located just southwest of Chicago, IL has an immediate opening for an experienced Vehicle Test Engineer in their Vehicle Systems Group.
Position Overview:
The applicant will be part of a team of elite researchers involved in advancing the state-of-the-art for developing advanced hybrid and electric vehicle technologies. The candidate will be directly involved in the set-up and testing of advanced energy-efficient vehicles and powertrain subsystems including battery packs, motors, and energy control strategies.
Assist in the design and execution of experiments, gather and analyze data, and publish reports and technical papers in support of ongoing and future transportation research programs. This position is of a complex technical nature, involving a great deal of initiative, creativity, and independent judgment.
The work applies to projects which are often at the frontier of providing green solutions for sustainable transport, and includes assisting in identifying and developing new research areas and sponsors including programs in competition with other Labs and uncertain federal research dollars by anticipating new, innovative technologies and methodologies which will become state-of-the-art, both within the United States and internationally.
Qualifications:
The prospective candidate must be able to demonstrate the following career experience and skills sets:
- Advanced skill in designing, planning, benchmarking, and conducting meaningful experiments for advanced technology vehicles and components and making mid-course corrections to the project plan based on data.
- Considerable skill in operating testing devices and measurement tools, analyzing data setups, and using computer-aided devices to perform routine calculations and data quality control, e.g. LabVIEW and Matlab.
- Working knowledge of advanced powertrain development and testing, including engines, transmissions, and hybrid electric vehicle components and controls.
- Good knowledge of emissions control strategies for internal combustion engines and the effects of fuel composition and enhanced emissions controls.
- Good knowledge of computer modeling simulation techniques for vehicle simulation, engine analysis, and energy and emissions modeling.
- Good skill in project management, time management, organization, working on several projects simultaneously, and well-developed organizational skills.
- Good skill in oral and written communications and presentation including proposal development and contributions toward business development.
A prospective candidate must have either a Doctorate Degree and 0-1 years of experience/equivalent, or an M.S. degree in engineering with 2-3 years experience, or a B.A. Degree and 6-8 years of experience working in an automotive-related research environment with progressively increasing responsibility.
