Berkeley / Lose the Trash

Berkeley is glad you’re here! Each challenge you complete is a small step for Berkeley… and a giant leap for the planet. Take a picture of yourself completing the challenge below. Upload the photo here, and you’ll be entered into this week’s drawing. Then come right back and do it again.

Instructions:

Use products with less packaging and bring your reusable shopping bags to the grocery store. Manufacturing, transporting, and disposing of packaging all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. (Take a pic with your low-packaging items…)

I try to buy products with less packaging. When I can’t completely avoid the packaging I do my best to reuse materials. Check out this handy plastic bag drying rack that allows me to clean and re-use my plastic produce bags. I also recycle my plastic grocery bags, my dry cleaning hangars, my elastic bands and I donate my coffee filters to a local artist. What do you do to limit your waste production?

Awesome! I have a game I call 'Twice.' Any single-use plastic I use I challenge myself to use it twice. That serves two purposes: first I decrease my landfill impact by 50%, and second I so dread having to find a use for more plastics that it serves to keep my usage down!
