Why isn't planting trees on here?? If you plant a deciduous tree to the south or to the west of the house you will be eventually getting summer time cooling!!! You can also plant coniferious trees on the side that you get the most wintertime winds.
Other ideas: Buy cellular blinds for your windows. For an older house this will decrease your heating and cooling needs.

This list for Portland was created by the good folks at the BPS in Portland. Each city that has signed-up for the Local Action Challenge specifically requested these actions to take place by their residents. But yes, tree planting is one of the best things you can do! I haven't even been using my heat, not planning to until it really gets cold.
By the way why not make it a reasonable temp. If you are old yeah the temps recommended might be necessary. But during the Carter admin they recommended 55. It isn't that bad and it is 11 degrees different. I do 55-60 during the times I am home and 50 at night. Try it you might like it
