Recycle and Compost

Denver offers free curbside recycling to single family homes in Denver. Register for this service and help us reach our landfill waste diversion goal of 30% by 2012. If each household composted and recycled their waste – food and lawn - we could reduce the amount of solid waste going to landfills by over 75%. Denver has started a compost pilot for 1,000 homes, but you can begin to compost on your own. Consider taking a free compost class offered through the Denver Parks & Recreation department. Visit their website for a schedule. (Take a pic of yourself bringing a load out to the curb or composter!)

Each student has to opportunity the learn about the environmental impact of plastic bags, and then help change behavior through this program, encouraging people to reuse the bags when they shop, go to the library, or as a tote bag for work.

Use Alternative Transportation

Try the bus: If one person replaced one car trip each week with walking, bicycling, or the bus it would decrease carbon emissions by 250 pounds per year. Or ride a bike. On Earth Day of 2010, Denver will launch a citywide bike share program called Denver B-Cycle. Residents and visitors will be able register and then have access to bikes throughout the City. Plant a Tree (or sponsor a tree planting)

The loss of natural forests around the world contributes more to global emissions each year than the transport sector. Curbing deforestation is a highly cost-effective way to reduce emissions. (United Nations Environmental Programs) In the Denver region, the Mile High Million campaign aims to plant one million trees by 2025. Every tree planted counts towards this goal. Make sure you register your tree by visiting the Greenprint Denver website.

Conserve Water

Water is a limited resource in the West, and conservation is a critical concern. Do one of the following: change your faucet aerators to low flow to save 55% more water and energy, plus a water savings of over 12,000 gallons per year; take a shorter shower (if all Denver residents reduce their shower time by 45 seconds, we could collectively save over 400 million gallons of water each year); check for leaks by putting food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Fixing it can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
