The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston
The Green Gorilla is SustainLane's newest animation, and I say check it out. It's a great video that manages to be fun and carry a message at the same time.
An island of garbage the size of Texas floating in the Pacific Ocean sounds like science fiction, but unfortunately it's hard fact. KJ - the gorilla - not only exposes the problem, but provides the start of a solution, which is to stop using disposable plastic bags. I'm hoping that future episodes will show us more about how KJ came to be living with a rock band and just maybe some ideas for dealing with the floating trash.
The animation is definitely aimed at kids, and I think it hits the mark. Everyone under ten I've shown it to has absolutely loved it, but people of all ages should take a look.
I hope the next episode isn't too far off.

CatalogChoice.org is a great website. I submitted requests for five catalogs about three months ago, and they no longer appear in my mailbox - it works. Since then I've brought stacks of junk mail to my desk and logged on.
I still make use of any postage-paid envelope someone is dumb enough to include in their junk, but CatalogChoice makes that unnecessary.
The war may not be completely winable, but CatalogChoice.org makes it easier to fight.

Trying to find an acceptable sunscreen has been a summer hobby of mine for years, but it seemed a given that a couple of days in Yosemite meant a scarlet nose.
I finally took a tip from a friend and tried a sun hat, one made with sun-screening fabric. It really worked - and no chemicals, no funny smell (and taste), and no goo.

It's not that hard to grow your own tomatoes. Trust me. You don't even need a garden, tomato vines are quite happy in a large pot.
When April comes around, find a local nursery and get an Early Girl, a Better Boy, or a Striped German, although my favorite is a Sun Gold cherry. Add some good soil, organic fertilizer, water regularly but not too much, then wait for August.
You'll be glad you did.

The main reason I buy eggs from Judy's Family Farms is that their hens aren't raised in cages, but I also appreciate the fact that they're organic, fresh, and widely available.
I have friends who rave about eggs that are fresh from the nest, and who go miles out of their way to farmers markets to get them. I'm sure those are terrific eggs, but I don't have that option. So I buy Judy's, and it's not a bad second choice.

Straus organic whole milk yogurt is the best, it has a thick, creamy texture that doesn't curdle and a rich mild taste.
I know people who eat this with fruit, and who use it for smoothies, and who make sauces with it, and probably somebody out there hides the carton and calls it 'lite' sour cream.
I just use a spoon, and sometimes a bowl.

Maybe it's because I had the plain, rather than the kind with fruit in it, that I think of this as generic yogurt, but that's not to say it wasn't good.
This is a very mild, creamy yogurt that isn't too thick. It tastes more like milk, good organic milk, than most yogurts.
It would make the ultimate raita, except buy extra, because you'll probably eat a few spoonfuls as you're peeling the cucumbers.

Jason Dandruff Relief shampoo looked like it might be a way for me to have my once-weekly scalp treatment without submitting my system to whatever they put into Head & Shoulders. (Don't ask what that might be - I've never dared to read the label.)
One use of Jason's did nothing for my scalp, so I kept trying. Five days later I still couldn't notice a difference, and my hair was starting to look as though I was using a bar of Dial soap.
I'm back to Head & Shoulders once a week for now, but I'll keep looking for something better. This isn't it.

Gioia serves the only pizza I've encountered on the west coast that made me think of Di Fara's in Brooklyn. It really is that good.
The crust is thin, crisp/chewy, and has real flavor, you could eat this crust naked. Toppings are all excellent, I love the mushroom, but I've never had anything that wasn't great.
Prices are as high as the pizza is good, bring a fat wallet, but don't miss this place. Worth a detour, at least.

101 things anyone can do to both support birds and to avoid doing harm. Includes sections on bird feeders and bird baths, maintaining a bird-friendly environment, food recommendations, rodent control, plants you can grow (and why), and what fertilizers and pesticides to avoid.
This books isn't just for bird lovers, it's for anyone who either lives around birds or who would like to.
