4-year-olds should be the official testers for all shoes. They drag their toes to stop their bikes; they splash in puddles, run through sand, and then grind their wet shoes against rocks and tree branches. They use them in lieu of hammers and saws, and typically wear a new pair out in about two weeks. That is why I was amazed when the Keen water sandals I purchased for my four-year-olds held up so well. It made me wonder if Keen has disavowed planned obsolescence. Not only did they hold up, but they are easy for my boys to put on and provide great protection from stubs and scrapes that other sandals seem to promote. The only problem is that they will grow out of perfectly good shoes!

Due to concern about endocrine disruptors we have been trying to avoid plastic. As I understand it, there are safer and less safe variations of plastic. But our guiding principle is "better safe than sorry." That is why we were ecstatic to discover Born Free glass baby bottles. They also offer a safer plastic version is free of Bisphenol-A which we use for mobile activities where we need more durability. I highly recommend this company.

I spent a couple yeas in Baltimore before heading back home to Colorado. One of my favorite places in the city was (and still is) bluehouse. The store is within an old warehouse with exposed brick walls and wood beams. The wide variety of tasteful and sustainable home furnishings makes you want to move right in. The combination of the organic café and eco shopping make it a worthy destination if you are visiting Baltimore, or a great place to hang out if you live there.

I admit it. I do not go to Chipotle because they are one of the most enlightened companies in the U.S. I started going to what I think was the very first location on Evans near DU years ago simply because it was delicious and quick. I have been a customer ever since. It in only recently that I realized how green the company is and all they are doing to shift the modus operandi of the food industry toward a more sustainable model.

I was elated to find a lawn care company that offers an organic solution to keeping both our lawn and our kids healthy. I found the company responsive, courteous, and reasonably priced. If you live in the Front Range, I highly recommend this company.

I love Teko socks. I originally purchased them specifically because the company is doing everything they can to be the epitome of sustainable. Then I wore them and had to buy more. Fortunately the socks are incredibly comfortable so my feet, head and heart all feel good about the purchase.

Thank goodness for Revolution cleaners. If it were not for them, we would not have a completely safe alternative for "dry cleaning" here in Boulder. However the icing on the cake is their customer service. They pick up and deliver so we just call when we have a load to do. There are other cleaners in town that use a supposedly environmental friendly alternative to PERC, but there is too much doubt in my mind about their process per this NPR story:

If you want to be confident that you are living in the healthiest home possible, Jacques Environmental Services is the company to call. I expected the usual suggestions about non-toxic cleaners, zero VOC paint, and organic textiles. Instead I got a forty page report that included indoor air quality assessment, electromagnetic radiation readings, and a laundry list of suggestions on making our home as healthy as possible. Paige was incredibly professional and even had a list of vetted vendors to help with his recommendations. I highly recommend this company.

I just bought a pair of pants from Nau's new store in Boulder. I had seen their ads and visited their website before the store opened here in Boulder. I admit that I was predisposed to liking the stuff because the company was built from scratch to promote positive change. Fortunately I did not need to force myself to like the clothing. I expected some variation of outdoor status quo but instead found new and cool lifestyle clothing.
So far I have only purchased pants that fit and feel great. I am sure I will be buying more and feeling good about supporting a company that is doing the right thing inside and out.
