Give Thanks and Go Organic

Every year, we eat green bean casserole at Thanksgiving. I love it, and I usually get seconds. I recently read that green beans are on the top 10 list of produce items to purchase organic. Non-organic green beans can have traces of Acephate, Benomyl, Chlorothalonil, and Methamidophos which causes damage to the brain and nervous system, and can contribute to the likelihood of birth defects. This is also important to consider if you are feeding pureed grean beans to babies. I think our casserole is going to get an upgrade this thanksgiving.

Fiber is my friend

Eating whole grains reduces your risk of developing bowel disorders, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, high cholesterol, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. With a list of benefits like that, it really makes spending the extra dollar for whole grain pasta seem that much cheaper. What's more, I can barely tell the difference in taste when I'm eating whole grain pasta. It's a little nuttier, but if it's covered in sauce, who can really tell? The Safeway O Organics brand of whole wheat pasts is pretty inexpensive, and easy to find. Spaghetti got better.

Paraben Free Facial Mask

This face mask is paraben free. Parabens are a preservative common in many cosmetics, especially anything that has to be rinsed away. Parabens have been found in cancer cells, but no direct link has been scientifically proven that the topical application of products containing parabens contribute to the formation or growth of cancerous cell. Despite the absence of concrete scientific proof, I like to purchase products that don't use such preservatives, unlike the Queen Helene facial mask--which does have parabens. I've been breaking out a lot lately, so I decided to start doing weekly masks to soothe my skin and help my breakouts go away faster. My skin does feel better after I do this mask, but it's not very powerful. It doesn't dry and crack like traditional masks (which I kinda like) either. On the up side, this products was under $10, and doesn't irritate my face.

Review of Table Beet

The Beet is On

Beets contain high amounts of vitamin C. They are also high in folate, soluble and insoluble dietary fibre and antioxidants. Also, according to Wikipedia, "Beetroots are rich in the nutrient betaine. Betaine supplements, manufactured as a byproduct of sugar beet processing, are prescribed to lower potentially toxic levels of homocysteine (Hcy), a naturally occurring amino acid that can be harmful to blood vessels thereby contributing to the development of heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease." I love them for their bright color, sweet taste, and unmistakeable soft and tender texture. They are delicious with spinach and goat cheese, and a bowl full of borshct is always a treat. The beet is definitely on.

Trying to Lower My Risk of Breast Cancer

My physician recently told me that I have lumps in each of my breasts. He instructed me that this is normal for many women, but to make sure I perform regular breast exams and watch for any changes. At 25, my risk for breast cancer is much lower, but 1 in 7 women develop breast cancer in their life time. Some risk factors are out of my control like the fact that I have no children.

One of the risk factors that I can control is lowering the amount of toxic substances that I expose myself to. Parabens have been found in cancer cells, but scientific studies have yet to confirm a direct link between parabens and breast cancer.

Other recent studies have concluded that the skin absorbs more chemicals from topical substances than was previously believed. Parabens and aluminum are common in conventional antiperspirant. I use Tom's of Maine deodorant (I'm partial to the calendula scent) for all of these reasons. I know that it isn't as strong as conventional brands, but I take comfort in knowing that I'm putting my long term health first.

I realize that the scientific community hasn't reached a definite conclusion about the link of antiperspirant, parabens, and breast cancer, but until then, I've decided to play it safe and lay off the antiperspirant.

Probiotic yogurt drink for breakfast on the go.

Around 70% of our immune system is located in our intestine, which contains 100,000 billion bacteria. Consuming probiotic foods promote a healthy immune system. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that are often found in fermented foods like yogurt. They replenish the good bacteria or "gut flora" in our intestines that can be depleted by excess alcohol, stress, and disease. These are the facts that influence me to buy DanActive. I know that it is not a perfect product, but it offers some probiotic benefits combined with several instances of convenience. First of all, DanActive is available at my local grocery store, and I do not live close to a health food store that would offer more organic and local options. Second, is the practical aspect of it being drinkable yogurt. I literally drink in under ten seconds every morning and I use it to wash my vitamin down. I drink it because I rush out the door almost every morning, and I know how absolutely vital it is to eat SOME kind of breakfast every morning. Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast every morning are able to maintain their weight over time, and control their appetite throughout the day. So while I wish that DanActive were organic, and locally distributed, I think it's doing me more good than harm.

Plus, the containers that it comes in are plastic #5 which is recyclable almost everywhere.

French with a healthy twist

Paninins, crepes, truffles, quiche are just a few of the fine french lunch items you can find in this cafe, but the owner Sylvie pumps out a huge amount of homemade healthy goodies like home-brewed kombucha, goji berry chocolate treats, and portobellas stuffed with quinoa. All the crepes are made with organic buckwheat flour. Her menu is seasonal, and uses organic produce wherever possible. Lunch is served on beautiful glass toile plates and metal silverware you have to get out of a French style grain cupboard. Wash down your healthy French food with water that sits on the counter in a glass pitcher containing big black hunks of charcoal to purify your water. Also the food is great. You really can't go wrong with Crepe O Chocolat if you're in downtown San Francisco

LuluLemon going in the right direction

When i bought my first Lulu Lemon yoga top, I didn't know anything about sustainability. I loved it. It's stylish feminine and feels great to work out in. I'm tempted to wear it out on a Friday night. After learning that nylon and polyester comes from petroleum, I took a look at my top, all nylon. *frown face* I did some research today and Lulu Lemon is coming out with a line made with organic and sustainable fibers, and they have committed to a 5 year plan to make their clothing more waste efficient, as well as having LEED certified buildings for their retail stores. You can read more about their plans to improve their environmental practices here. http://www.lululemon.com/about/legacies/community

I love Rodney but this workout is just okay.

Did I mention I love Rodney Yee? I do. His voice is calming, his temperment is patient, and he just looks so cute in those spandex shorts he always wears. This a decent yoga workout that lasts an hour. I felt there were too many warrior poses, and I get a little bored, but it's a nice change up to the other videos I do some times. Like I said in another review, I know that doing yoga is not more green than say running, but it makes me feel good. Also, the dvd comes in a plastic petroleum case which is bad for global warming, but I guess I save carbon by not driving to the yoga studio.

Short Workouts great for loosening up.

Why is yoga more green than running? It's not, but exercising is good for your health, and allows you the stability to focus on making other things better in life. I've seen people make fun of Rodney Yee before, but I love him. He is well spoken, well paced, and in tune with how people should be instructed. This dvd has 3 twenty minute yoga workouts. Each workout features basic sun salutations combined with a series of poses that focus on strength, stamina, and flexibility. They are all good for beginners, with a little challenge thrown in so that if you have been doing yoga for awhile you still get something out of it. I like how I can choose between 3 different workouts depending on what I feel like that day (tired (stamina), achy(flexibility), or maybe ready to push myself (strength) but I don't have the time). I know that the dvd this package comes in is made of petroleum, but I guess I save carbon by not having to go to the yoga studio on the bus.
