Review of CooKit

The many benefits of the CooKit!

The CooKit is a simple solar cooker made from cardboard and aluminum foil. It is light-weight, folds flat and if properly taken care of it can last for years. Domestically this cooker can help reduce gas and electricity usage as well as replace the need for fire to cook when camping. In developing nations the CooKit helps preserve forests, protects women from the effects of indoor smoke inhalation, reduces time spent collecting firewood, increases economic standing, and pasteurzies water. This cooker is ideal for the developing world because it is made of materials that are widely available so it can be easily reproduced. I love the CooKit, and so will you! The one non-green element is that it depends on the principle of the Greenhouse effect, which requires use of a plastic bag to trap heat. The bags that are sold with the CooKit can be used between 10 and 15 times before they need replacement. They can be replaced with oven-roasting turkey bags from the local grocery store. As an alternative to this, some people have placed glass containers over the black pot. For more information please see www.solarcooking.org

Review of The HotPot

The Hot Pot rocks!

I love the Hot Pot solar cooker. The high quality aluminum reflectors fold really flat for easy transportation. The glass bowl elminates the need for a plastic cooking bag as the heat-trapping agent. Food cooks just like it would in a slow cooker, but with the warmth of the sun instead of electricity. In countries where forests are being depleted for fuel sources, solar cookers are a great solution. I will point out that the CooKit solar cooker (www.solarcookers.org) with its plastic cooking bags remains ideal for developing countries because it is made with cardboard and aluminum foil, both of which are widely available in most places, and it is more affordable.
