Naturally sourced concentrated cleaner and degreaser

Bi-o-Kleen is perfect. Barely a fragrance, made with grapefruit seed and orange peel extract. Contains NO: chlorine, ammonia, petroleum solvents, butyl, sodium lauryl sulfate. Yet it lathers up nice! Fantastic on floors, leaves no stickiness with little effort. It also does NOT contain a few other awful things but it's too long a list to include here . . . of course, biodegradable. Made in the USA.

Out of the Closet

Out of the Closet keeps great clothing on their racks because they encourage high turnover through a unique system of discounts depending on how long an item has been on the rack. I have another theory as to why such a big percentage of their stuff is high quality as compared with other second hand things - Out of the Closet has a good reputation for the effective use of its proceeds by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. My guess is that conscientious, active, youthful consumers are more likely to donate things to Out of the Closet than to other second-hand shops.

Review of Down Comforter

Locally manufactured down comforters

My very high quality Warm Things down comforter was made in San Rafael, California! Yes, the down comes from Europe. But if you are bent on having a new comforter, Warm Things is a superior choice to others because most of their products are manufactured in San Rafael, keeping more money in the local economy. Maybe a little less emissions, too.

Sustainable, healthy deli experience! A big restaurant with a very nice sense of community

Until I found this place, I thought deli foods and sustainability/health were a contradiction. But here you can get those mile-high pastrami and corned beef sandwiches made with Niman Ranch beef (humanely, sustainably and locally raised) on Acme rye (organic and local). The chicken they use for the Matzo Ball soup, chopped chicken liver sandwiches, roast chicken and liver and onions is made with Fulton Valley (organic or free range, hormone and antibiotic free). Their turkey is Diestel (local, natural) and every Thursday Riverdog farms (organic, local) delivers seasonal vegetables, and the chefs plan their menus accordingly! (Riverdog has a stand at the Thursday farmer's market right outside Saul's doors, and combines the trip, minimizing emissions!) Of course, they serve fair trade, organic coffee. And the strong sense of community - chatty regulars, owners and managers - would make environmental theorist Bill McKibben proud.

Natracare for Women's health

These guys come without those wasteful applicators. Chlorine free, organic all cotton. It is so important to keep dioxins (carcinogens, mutagens) away from this part of your body! Natracare products are compostable, being of natural materials and plastic free. The major downside to not being a European Natracare consumer: it is manufactured in Sweden and Germany and is most likely airfrieghted for purchase everywhere else. On the other hand, Seventh Generation women's products are manufactured in Canada. (a bit closer). On the other hand, Seventh Generation uses plastic packaging for its pads, the bag they come in as well as individually wrapped with plastic, while Natracare uses all natural materials even in its packaging. . . . sigh
