My Dream Product
Something that could remove all the toxins retroactively from people's homes, like from their paint and glues. Oh to dream...
How we'll get around in 20 years...
Better public transportation that is powered by bio-diesel. And more organized carpooling.
Offline, find me...
At school or playing with my dog.
My heroes
People who have the courage to try, even though they may not succeed at first or at all.
My non-green guilty pleasure
Driving 4 hours to see my boyfriend whenever I can.(although I drive to him because he has a V-8 explorer and I can't stand the idea of him polluing twice as much as me to get to eachother.)
I am under the impression that these are not needed.
It would be so much more helpful if I could remember where I read this, but I specifically remember reading about a study where fruit and vegetable wash was compared with rinsing with water and with scrubbing and/or soaking with a natural detergent.
I remembered this specifically because my dad had become obsessed with these washes after the spinach thing a couple years ago.
The fruit and veg wash actually scored the worst.
The best way was to soak in a bowl for a few minutes and then scrub with a brush(or rinse and remove outside leaves if it is something like lettuce that can't be scrubbed).
You can also make your own wash just like you can make your own cleaners; water with vinegar and salt or hydrogen peroxide. A little natural soap. You probably already own these. Save your money and get yourself a pedicure!(With natural nail polish of course)
These work great and are so much cheaper, don't require one more plastic bottle or shipping.
I did a few minutes of searching to find this study, I think I read it on national geographic's or discovery's green websites, but no luck.
I did find this summary of a university study so I copied and pasted for a quick reference:
"A three-year study showed that rinsing under tap water significantly reduced residues of nine of the twelve pesticides examined across fourteen commodities. Four fruit and vegetable wash products were found to be no more effective at removing eight of nine pesticide residues from produce than either a 1% solution of dishwashing liquid or rinsing under tap water alone for three commodities studied."
So, I felt the need to respond. I have been on a minimalist kick lately and this seemed like one more thing we don't need.

I do love the concept, I use the bag all the time. When I walk my dog I clip it to my belt, when I make a quick stop or buy something unexpected I now can always say, No thanks I have a bag. I love that. However, all three of my Chico bags have begun to unravel at the seams after about 5 uses. I have tried to mend them myself but I am not a practiced sewer so it is more of a temporary hold. Each time I use one I cross my fingers that it isn't going to come undone. But they fit so well in a purse or backpack that I still use them and don't regret the purchase. I will probably look for an different brand for my next purchase though.

You should check out Flip and Tumble bags. They are brand new, and are kind of an upgrade to Chico Bags (gotta admit, I still love my chico :) more »
I too own a few pairs of Pikolinos. The first pair I received as hand me downs(my aunt didn't like the slight heel, she is 6 ft tall) and since then I have bought my own. They are so worth the money if you want to actually be able to walk any distance in your cute shoes. I recently wore them in New York City and it was the first time I didn't get blisters, I am a daily Rainbow flip flop wearer here in Cali but my sister makes me wear "real shoes" when I visit her. I would always get blisters when I tried to walk all day in my other cute ballet flats which I won't name but were bought on sale of course at Nordstrom rack. There are quite a few pictures of me on past visits in Brooklyn or Greenwich Village sitting on a park bench attending to my feet. So this time I went to my locally owned shoe store (on college ave in Berkeley, Ca) that carries all those great but not on sale at Nordstrom rack brands like Pikolinos,Dansko and Ecco and I made my self just invest in some good quality shoes, although one pair was on sale. I broke them in here and never once had to buy a bandaid. My sister was so astonished she now owns a few pairs and there are her favorite for the long walking days of commuting in NYC.

I have tried them all. I'm not exaggerating. You could name any brand and I have tried it, I'm a product junkie. From Jurlique to Aveda, Dr. Haushka, Benefit, Kiehl's, ProActive, Natureopathica, I could go on but you get it, to supermarket brands and homemade recipes, I have tried to find a mask that I love. Many have done pretty darn well but this is the first one that I immediately knew I would buy again and again. I am 24, have really oily skin and still break out, esp around my period. I used this mask during an esp bad month and thought I was dreaming when I took it off. My skin had that "glow", the one every package claims you will see after using the product, and looked like it does after a few days or a week of recovering from a breakout, not how it usually looks on the first day or two. I had my sister try it to see if it was a fluke or just me and she couldn't believe it either. She is older so she confiscated it at once(I ordered a few more so I could give them as presents). It stings a little at first, like a minty sting. I found this through a neem link on the website for Bach's Flower essences. Sorry for the long post but this discovery warranted my raving. If you are a chronic product tester like me I highly suggest you try this one.

After reading this I called my parents to ask if they had ordered a turkey yet. I said that even though we have a delicious turkey every year could they think about switching to an organic one from a farm in Sonora, which is close to where I grew up. My dad responds "Do you mean a Diestel? We have that every year. We order it from the local meat market." Turns out that the turkey all our relatives rave about, and all my friends want leftovers from, is a Diestel. I highly recommend this turkey, I always thought the reason our turkey was so much better than others was my mom's cooking expertise but it turns out my parents knew that organic free range meat was the secret to having the best turkey on the block! And I thought my boyfriends liked Thanksgiving at my house because of my family...

That's fantastic information, Paige -- I agree with you: the produce washes are a bit overkill and you can do a lot by scrubbing and peeling your vegetables. Or - buy organic. I think that this product is marketed... more »
