Wood floor finish is safe and lasting
One and half years ago I sanded my oak wood floors and finished them with a Swedish product from the Bona company called Traffic. The floors look excellent. I did it myself with very few problems. The stuff is water soluble and does not have the noxious fumes found in solvent base finishes, yet has the hardness and sheen of those older finishes.
It isn't cheap, but worth every penny. If you are hiring someone to do the work, the cost of the finish is a small part of the total cost, so don't skimp. This stuff will last much longer than a cheaper water based finishes.
