Review of G Living

Sweet media channel

not getting enough about sustainability on the boob tube?? who even watches TV these days???

deep sound/visual channel "G LIVING" provides the deep dish on all things--from up and coming musicians starting their biodiesel bus tours (woven), to young designers making bamboo clothing (amanda shi), to so-called hollywood G-glam events (with "green" ford hybrids in the background, et cetera)... well, it covers everything that treehugger doesn't, or does, and more.

sarah and boise are good hosts. however, you'll find that the guests are the funniest. some of the most meaningful comments come from the musicians. go figure!! check it out~

aimed at the urban gen-x/gen-y set.

Review of AIDS Marathon

really good contribution to society, plus exercise!

it's not the same as all of us one day giving up our cars forever, but this might be the next best thing! I haven't run in this marathon yet but am sponsoring one of my friends for a november run.

AIDS Marathon seems to be a really good collaborative feel- and do-good program similar to Habitat for Humanity (except when they are excluded from building near posh areas), Boys and Girls Clubs, or any number of socioeconomic-focused volunteer organizations.

Sharp discussion of bike vs auto TCO

TCO stands for total cost of ownership. In the webpage here, Ken Kifer covers the costs of bicycling vs auto driving really well. You can find a similar arguments in Terry Taminen's book "Lives per Gallon" but if you don't have time to read books, Kifer's analysis is a short must-read.

Could have better page layout in the beginning but the content is solid. I'm writing this here as a review, although I mean for it to be a sustainlane blog entry of sorts.

too sweet for words

Silvie makes the best hot chocolate and pastries I've had in SF.

Many organic ingredients, crazy recipes, fun hangout. Kombucha, gluten-free gojiberry cakes, caramelized coconut pastries... bring it on! Bring cash.

Sharp office tool

The handles of these scissors are not 100% recycled, but 70% is a great start! ACME makes a "virgin" version too, which is cheaper, but that's no way to live.

These shears make a sharp statement on any material at hand.

You can buy Klean.earth scissors at any office supply store. Should only be a couple dollars more than the cheapo version.

Suggested improvements:
* 100% recycled materials including blades, next time
* No packaging

Review of Critical Mass

awesome!!!

in a word, ****ing-awesome!!!

this was my first ever critical mass. the police were quite useful and "cooperative" - they ran interference at intersections for massers to keep us in one smoothly flowing pool. most motorists and passersby were amused. only a few exhibited bad behavior (swearing, throwing water bottles, trash, running over bikes)...

i really enjoyed this ride, it was perfect weather (slightly cool) and we did a couple-a tunnel runs (stockton and another one)... biked along market, chinatown, SOMA, ended in mission area. when my friends and stopped to grab food and beer for a while, we later saw some bicyclists pass by, continuing to ride. what a wonderful night!! :)

with burning man on this week (arson, suicide notwithstanding), the mass was pretty small--postage stamp size?--but still sizable. it was great!! I took photos also, which i'll upload sometime soon and post up here. sufficed to say, it was quite the tame event. so much for liberal media hype!!!

Review of The 11th Hour

It's 11:59:59... Get Excited!!

This is a really awesome film. I really enjoyed it. My housemate was tired and thought it got a little muddled in the middle, but ultimately we agreed it painted "the whole picture" really well. She liked the part about living on current daylight.

I think this is the film I've been waiting for.

I hope that Warner Bros allows the film to go wide release (dvd press) quickly so that teachers can get this important film asap, instead of a year from now. If you wanted to watch Inconvenient Truth or A Crude Awakening, you don't have to--watch this instead!

The most important thing to do, if you like this film and believe the urgency of taking action, is to walk the talk, and get your less nature-loving friends and family to see the film too.

i didn't buy it!

i didn't. my roommate did.

these are horrible for you--rated "D-" by about.com health: http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/111726.html

not only is it overpackaged with straight-to-landfill styrafoam waste and plastic wrap, but the food isn't organic or otherwise healthy. way too many satty fatties per serving. (54% RDA)

avoid this product and patronize a local bakery instead.

Review of Amtrak

The New Hotness

where to begin?

i took the capitol corridor train today from oakland to sacramento and it was about 80% bliss. the other 20% i'll get to later. blissful: walking around, being able to stretch, crowding the snack bar for sausages, french toast and chatting with fellow travellers; relaxing by myself with a huge table and window; seeing all parts of california between the two cities; not having to drive.

(the info they'd prefer me to put on this review: taking trains instead of planes for medium-distance travel reduces your greenhouse gas pollution contribution by a factor of 10! see http://www.eurostar.com/UK/us/leisure/about_eurostar/environment/tread_lightly.jsp)

the 20%: diesel, not bullet train-smoove. the train leans side-to-side because of its high center of gravity, shared track w/ freighters and less track and train finesse than japanese trains... might make some people sea(?)sick but you get used to it. still, loved it! i'm going to take more amtrak trips. two so far.
