Dr Scholl's Sustainably Made Exercise Sandals

I haven't tried these sandals but I thought I'd pass along the information. The famous Dr Scholl's now makes their classic slide sandal with a vegetable tanned leather or natural hemp fiber upper. The strap has a recycled metal adjustable buckle, and they make the footbed with sustainable Brazilian wood so forests aren't harmed in their manufacture. They say the corn-based outsole is "durable, yet biodegradable". And for each pair purchased, 10 trees are planted. Sounds good to me.

If you've tried these, I'd love to know what you think.

Birkenstock Sandals and Shoes

I've worn Birkenstocks forever, and love them for their comfort--but I never really researched them, so this was interesting... If you go to the site you'll find the interesting history, dating back to 1774, of the shoe design. The materials the shoes are made of vary. The footbeds are made of natural latex and cork, and the liners and uppers, it seems, are all suede or leather. So far I haven't been able to find out much more about the company and its ecological views.

There is an offshoot brand though, called Birki's, that was founded more recently, also in Germany--by Stephan Birkenstock. These shoes/sandals use the same kind of footbed and the styles are similar to Birkenstocks. The company offers leather free (vegan) shoes and sandals in addition to leather and suede, and they have a very conscientious policy toward being eco-friendly and sustainable, in materials and in manufacture. I haven't personally tried them, so another review would be welcome.

I love my Birkenstocks and wear them often. I'm still wearing the pair of Birkenstock sandals I bought in Germany back in 1990. I've never had to have them resoled. more »

The Artist General Store promotes nonconformity...ie: finding alternatives.

I am the proprietor for the Artist General Store. The clever sayings on the shirts and other items are the main reason I'm listing the store as being green. The products reflect my values by promoting nonconformity---warning about what happens when people just go with the flow. And they do it in a fun way. They have been a hit with the green, conscientious, students and faculty at Stanford University and elsewhere. Some T-shirts are unbleached organic cotton, made in the US, and are very nice. Greeting and Note cards may be printed on paper that is 30% post consumer waste and 50% total recycled fiber. Packaging is getting greener as new options are available. But the really green thing about my store, compared to many, is that items are printed on demand. So there is never any wasted inventory if a product doesn't sell. And that's big. I hope that in the future more of the products will be greener in manufacturing and materials, but I'm working on that. I think that the messages justify the green listing of the products, and make them worth a look...I hope you enjoy them!

Great T-Shirt--Comfortable and Clever!

This shirt is from my own store, artistgeneralstore.com, and I'm really happy to offer something that's made from organically grown cotton, and that reflects my values through its clever encouragement of non-conformity. Historically many people tend to follow the crowd, and if more of us start thinking for ourselves, our lives and the planet will be a lot better off. This shirt is really soft, feels great next to my skin, and I feel really good about wearing it. The natural cotton is organically grown, and no bleaching is used, so its manufacture is soft on the environment. And at the same time, I love getting the reaction I get from my friends and coworkers. It serves as a constant reminder to strive for individuality...The shirt is very popular with students and faculty at Stanford University.
