Composter
We've had the Garden Gourmet compost bin for over 7 years and it's still going strong. I may move it this year to a sunnier spot. In MN, the long winters mean that nothing much happens for a long time. Still for two people it has worked well for us. If more people composted, we extend the life of our landfills significantly.

Back to the Future
I grew up riding the train - to Chicago and the west coast and LOVED it. I was so sad to see train travel diminish as I grew into adulthood, but now I am a grandmother and have just taken a train trip with a grandson to Chicago and it's even better than it was when I was a kid. The seats are big - way more room than an airplane, the cars are quiet, there is still a "dome" car - now the lounge car, there are electrical outlets for computers or other electronic equipment and you can move around easily - plus you still have that great sense of being in a funhouse when you cross from one car to the other and have the floor moving and rails clacking beneath you. My hope and dream is that rail travel will continue to grow and my grandchildren will know that wonderful sense of traveling across our country and really seeing it all - backyards, small towns, mountains, farmland, industrial parts of our cities. As a people we need to invest in this form of transportation.

Local and Eco
I use Restore Concentrated Laundry Detergent because of its non-toxic, renewable plant-based ingredients. It has no petroleum base or phosphates and it was developed and produced right here in Minnesota, by a local woman. It is now going national. They also have developed a system that allows you to take your empty plastic container into the store (selected Coops and Natural Food stores) and refill it, keeping plastic from the landfills. Because it's concentrated, one 32fl.oz bottle will do 32 loads of laundry. We all need to do laundry, and it's nice to know that the product you're using is not only cleaning our clothes, but being gentle on the earth too.

can you add worms to this kind of composter, and can they move between levels? I know they can't stay out in the winter outdoors in the northeast or the worms will be lost. more »
