Review of earthsake

5 star rating Review of earthsake May 30, 2008 | Posted in Berkeley, Baby

Organic cotton is expensive... So buy more of it! If more people buy organic cotton bedding and clothing, it will make it more attractive and profitable. I cringe when I see the price of organic cotton sheets but once I invested in two sets of sheets, I am very happy that I won't have to buy more again for a long time...

Review of Breads of India

3 star rating Review of Breads of India May 30, 2008 | Posted in Berkeley, Restaurants

Popular & Tasty... Breads of India is one of the big favorites in Berkeley - it's a restaurant that attracts a lot of people and often has a bit of a wait on weekend evenings. For good reason - they do have solid, very tasty food.

Their food is really good - they use fresh ingredients and focus on organic food...

Review of The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse

5 star rating Review of The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse May 30, 2008 | Posted in Oakland, Family Living

Favorite place for unusual things... If you have never been -- get off at the MacArthur BART station and walk a few blocks up Telegraph to the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse. This place is an inspiration -- and it's also a great place to donate your unfinished projects, excess supplies or other odds and ends that you think might be...

Review of Chabot Space & Science Center

5 star rating Review of Chabot Space & Science Center May 30, 2008 | Posted in Oakland, Environment and Society

SonicVision! If you only go to Chabot for one thing - let it be SonicVision. It might sound hokey or cheesy - I'll grant that parts of it are a bit overdone or dated - but it is really fun and a tremendous artistic effort.

Chabot has this tremendous dome theatre -- it's not just used for light shows but for...

Review of Cafe Fanny

5 star rating Review of Cafe Fanny May 30, 2008 | Posted in Berkeley, Restaurants

Cafe Fanny - j'adore! This is one of the few cafes in the Bay Area that really feels European - it's not a regular sit-down breakfast place and yet they attract a huge crowd on weekdays and weekends with a queue going out the door. They offer a limited menu and superlative coffee from Mr Espresso. All their bread is...

Review of Out of the Closet

4 star rating Review of Out of the Closet May 30, 2008 | Posted in Berkeley, Clothing

I usually hate thrift stores... Since 1990, Out of the Closet thrift stores have been dedicated to raising money for AIDS/HIV care and treatment programs. Some locations even offer walk-in HIV testing!

Out of the Closet is one of the few thrift stores I'll dare enter to look for clothing items -- they have a very good turnover...

Review of The Wooden Duck

5 star rating Review of The Wooden Duck May 30, 2008 | Posted in Berkeley, Furniture

Gorgeous Recycled Wood Furniture Wooden Duck is a great concept - they create classic, functional, elegant furniture from reclaimed wood. Much of their wood comes from the beams and supports in old buildings that are being demolished. These beams are huge - they are thick, solid and contain few knots, making them strong and ideal...

Review of East Bay Nursery

5 star rating Review of East Bay Nursery May 30, 2008 | Posted in Berkeley, Lawn & Garden

A complete & affordable garden center! I confess - it's been here for ages and I end up at so many other garden centers due to convenience or perceived cost savings. Finally, after searching high and low for ladybugs during a season that has been extraordinary for aphids, I landed here. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful...

Review of BART

4 star rating Review of BART May 30, 2008 | Posted in Oakland, Transportation

Despite the shortcomings... Public transportation is important to a large metropolitan area. BART meets a lot of people's needs on a regular basis. It has shortcomings: the tickets aren't cheap, the trains aren't clean and they stop running at midnight. This makes it difficult for me to encourage my car-free friends in San...

Review of Saul's Restaurant & Delicatessen

4 star rating Review of Saul's Restaurant & Delicatessen May 30, 2008 | Posted in Berkeley, Restaurants

Very Veg Friendly! Saul's is a fairly non-veg restaurant but they are pretty good about working with veg needs. The service can be a bit sketchy - servers are inconsistent and inattentive (almost like Santa Cruz!)

If you're vegan, there are so many better options in the area - Juice Bar Coop, Cha-Ya, Cafe...
