Review of Gorilla Coffee

Gorilla Coffee is fantastic - Good for the Body - good for the Planet - good for the Community!

I love checking out small roasters - particularly those who are doing their part to change the world - one bean at a time. Our family had the unique opportunity to visit a co-op in Nicaragua thanks to Thanksgiving Coffee founder Paul Katzeff who personally introduced us to a wonderful community in Aranjuez, Matagalpa, Nicaragua. To get in touch with the Sustainers themselves is truly the most rewarding possible situation.

So, buying coffee roasted in a New York City suburban community was equally an adventure for this San Francisco-bound native.

On a whim, I placed an order from the email I received from Sustainlane with Gorilla Coffee.

I loved the variety; the pine box was the first thing that our son commented on (though he tired to trick me into thinking that he made it from scratch himself). But the huge, red-colored stylized gorilla logo on the front was a dead giveaway.

The first thing I noticed that was different about their freshly-roasted coffee (I received an email soon after ordering telling me that the beans were going to be roasted that day - shipped out the next.) was that for a dark, rich-flavored roast though the beans were dark there was no surface oil on the beans! It was the best of both worlds to me I've finally GOT the difference between dark and light roast coffee, thanks to a local coffee shop purveyor who had attended a Coffee Retailer's training recently (though his company is NOT Starbuck's he benefits form a young staff member who was convinced to come on board from the large vendor) explained:

Light Roast = More Caffeine
Dark Roast = Less Caffeine

So, here I am, my first Gorilla Coffee experience, looking at these fantastic beans; the aroma just terrific (and each bean and roast so distinct it turns out that it was impossible to hold off on opening them - three LBs at once!) - and the dark color affirmed as potentially very tight, clean and dry beans. More caffeine?

New Green Discount Book as New Fundraising Opp

A new launch of a new readily available means to change the direction schools can fundraise The Green Zebra Discount Guide can be purchased direct from the publisher and paid for in a couple of different ways: http://www.thegreenzebra.org/ The first time I handled The Guide even knowing what was inside I got excited. The idea that a low-environmental-impact guide, also mid-tech (many of the sponsoring organizations do include online access info on the back side of their respective coupon page) could offer a discount to entice new customers to try and returning ones a reward for their commitment to Green. The publisher has all areas of interest covered. They also provide some handy education materials to orient the newbies to the issues of Green.
