Review of Red Fire Farm

veggie heaven

I have been a member of this organic CSA for two years. Having a farm share is like eating freshly picked vegetables still warm from the sun of your garden, but without the labor of growing and harvesting them yourself (which would be challenging in the 16 square foot yard of a city condo.) I also like that I'm supporting local agriculture and local business. Red Fire Farm offers an astonishing array of vegetables that change every week, many heirloom variety, and the people who run the farm and man the pickup locations are always friendly and helpful. I constantly rave about how healthy I feel all summer, when the race is on each week to consume all of the vegetables before I pick up the next batch. When the season ends and I have to go back to buying produce from the supermarket, I feel truly sad. I also save a ton of money on produce! You can find a CSA near you at www.localharvest.org.

Review of Pure Passion

Chock full of antioxidants

So I read about this drink on SustainLane and I finally found it at my local Whole Foods. To my delight, I discovered that not only is it fruity and delicious, but it has more than twice the antioxidants of orange juice! And with cold and flu season upon us, that's good news. I'm currently gulping it down to boost my immunity in these sub-zero temperatures of New England. I don't usually drink caffeine, as I'm quite sensitive to it, so I'm not sure how the yerba mate will make me feel, but with the 24 vitamins and minerals and 15 amino acids listed on the label, it's gotta be good for me, right?

Whole food snack bar

Larabars are delicious. And if you're following any type of special diet, all the better, because they are vegan, raw, unprocessed, have no added sugar, non-GMO, are gluten-, soy- and dairy-free, and Kosher! Wow! They have lots of flavors- Cashew Cookie is my favorite. I love the lemon too, but I'm sad to say that it contains "Natural Flavors" (which is sometimes code for chemicals.) Because of that, I'm only giving Larabar 3 stars. But, yum!

This yogurt puts all others to shame

If you love yogurt, but are concerned about the rampant mistreatment of cows on factory farms and don't want to fill your body with hormones, antibiotics, and other "extras" that are added to many dairy products, you must try Seven Star Farms organic yogurt. The only thing added is acidophilus, bifidus, and other live cultures. No dry milk, stabilizers, corn syrup, fructose sweeteners or artificial flavorings (like many of the other so-called "natural" brands.) This is the real deal from a small biodynamic farm... I am completely hooked! Add some fruit, a few walnuts and a squeeze of honey, and you've got a quick breakfast you can feel good about!

A great new wellness center in Arlington, MA

I just joined this wellness center in Arlington, MA (near Boston) as their Nutrition Coach. It is staffed by a great group of practitioners, including massage therapists, an acupuncturist, a chiropractor, a psychotherapist, and yoga instructors. They believe in a holistic and integrative approach to wellness. The space is light and airy and the whole place has a very calm, healing vibe. Bonus: the center is also chemical and allergen free!

Disappointed in this shampoo

I love most of the Avalon Organics products, but the Awapuhi Mango Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner do not moisturize my hair at all. They left my hair feeling and looking dry and unmanageable. For a person with oily hair, they might be okay, but for me the search continues for great shampoo. I must admit, it does smell great!

Great massage oil

I love this massage oil. It has a nice lavender scent and doesn't stain linens. As it's name implies, it is very emollient indeed, meaning it doesn't absorb into the skin right away, making it great for massage. It does eventually absorb, leaving your skin soft and smelling great! It's made of 100% organic plant oils and it's hypo-allergenic. You can also use it in your bath.

Balm for chapped lips, cuts, skin irritation

Herbal Ed's Salve is a very soothing balm that comes in a handy little tin. I use it on my chapped lips in the winter. It's also great for cuts and skin abrasions. It is made of olive oil, bee's wax, bee's propolis, comfrey root, calendula flower, chickweed herb, plaintain leaf, mullein ear, and st. joh'ns wort. It feels so natural and calming. Much better for your lips than petroleum-based chapsticks. It's made by a small company in Oregon, and all of the ingredients are either certified organic or custom wildcrafted.

Review of Homeodent

If you are taking homeopathic remedies

Homeodent Natural Toothpaste by Boiron was recommended by my homeopath because it does not contain any mint (which interferes with some homeopathic remedies.) It comes in 2 flavors: lemon and anise. I've tried both and I prefer the lemon (the anise flavor was too strong for me), which leaves my mouth feeling really fresh and clean. It contains no saccharin, artificial sweeteners or flouride.

Great unscented body lotion

Alba's Very Emollient Body Lotion is the perfect solution if you have dry skin. It feels nice and thick, yet it absorbs well and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth. And the 32 oz. bottle with the pump is a great deal!
