Great fun for a good cause
Every Friday night The Potter's House, an all-volunteer run coffeehouse established in 1960 in Adams Morgan hosts Sounds of Hope, a fundraiser for a local non-profit. The Potter's House matches a performer with a local charity and all proceeds from the night go to the charity. The performing space is terrific for the artist, the food is wonderful, and the place is entirely volunteer run. They also sell books and gifts on and offline. Free stuff...and keep it out of the landfill
Freecycle.com is a unique community of users who give away usable items they no longer need. Go to Freecycle.com, sign-up for the Freecycle group in your area and give and receive! Users post a description of the item they want to give away (bed linens, unopened food items, couches, computers, etc.), their location, and then others contact them if they want the item.
It's a great way to clean usable items that you no longer need out of your closet or garage and keep things out of the landfills as well.

One less car...
Zipcar offers car sharing service in a variety of locations around the world. Here in Washington, DC, they started the service with one or two cars in a few locations. It has exploded, with a variety of cars (sedans, station wagons, pick-ups) available for car less individuals such as me, who do need a car on occasions to get to places that public transportation doesn't reach. It's also great when you want to make a large shopping trip. I used a Mini Cooper yesterday to get to Thanksgiving dinner! Cars are reserved online. You go to the location, use an access card to get into the car, and off you go. It's a great service!

Zipcar - car sharing
Zipcar is a great service for someone like me that does not own a car, but on occasion I need to use one. The car is there when you need it and the best thing is that you don't have to circle the block for parking - they have reserved spots.
