10 Cosmetic Ingredients to Avoid

Posted on April 28, 2009

I recently found this great list on FitSugar.

Since your skin is the largest organ in your body, the article said, it absorbs everything including toxins. If you're worried about putting things like trans-fats into your body, then you should worry about which cosmetic ingredients to avoid, too.

Here they are:

  1. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Parabens: Used as a preservative to inhibit microbial growth and extend shelf life. Unfortunately, it can cause allergic reactions and skin rashes. Preliminary research found parabens in human breast cancer tumors.
  2. Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA): These are used as foaming agents, but can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation, and dryness of the hair and skin. DEA and TEA are toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time, and are associated with cancer in lab animals.
  3. Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea: Often used as preservatives, the American Academy of Dermatology has found these chemicals to be a primary cause of contact dermatitis (irritation caused by foreign substance). Both these chemicals release formaldehyde, which can be toxic.
  4. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate: This is a cheap, harsh detergent used in many shampoos for its ability to cleanse and foam. Often derived from petroleum, it causes eye irritation, dry scalp, skin rashes and other allergic reactions. Be on the lookout for pseudo-natural products that list this ingredient with the phrase "comes from coconuts" - it's still bad for you.
  5. Petrolatum: Also known as petroleum jelly, this is a mineral oil derivative that can clog your pores. This in turn disrupts your body's natural ability to moisturize its own skin, leading to dryness and chapping. Manufacturers use it because it's really inexpensive.

  • Propylene Glycol: Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural, but it's usually made from synthetic chemicals. It has been known to cause hives and eczema. Beware of related chemicals labeled PEG and PPG.
  • PVP/VA Copolymer: A petroleum-derived chemical that's used in hair styling products and some cosmetics. Considered toxic since if inhaled, it can damage the lungs.
  • Stearalkonium Chloride: This toxic chemical was designed by the fabric industry for use as a fabric softener. Companies use it in hair conditioners and lotions because it's much cheaper than natural conditioning ingredients such as proteins.
  • Synthetic Colors: Labeled as FD&C or D&C and followed by a number, these make products look pretty but can be carcinogenic.
  • Synthetic Fragrances: Labeled simply as "fragrance," there's no way to tell what chemicals are actually in the product. People can get headaches, dizziness, rashes, and respiratory problems from them. People may also experience hyper-pigmentation, which means this chemical may cause brown spots to form on your skin.

*These ingredients can be found in make-up, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, perfumes, baby care products, sunscreens, toothpastes, nail products, and deodorants. If you're looking for a good brand that doesn't contain these nasty ingredients, check out Aubrey Organics.

Note that many of these ingredients are in the "natural" products at health food stores.

It is scary what kind of junk is put in these products. Paying attention makes you a major label reader. Pay attention to generic terms as well such as "plant-based surfactants", "fragrance", and anything else that is not clearly defined.

This list is interesting, but the claims seem exaggerated. For example, if sodium laureth sulfate has not been irritating to my skin, there is no listed reason I should stop using it. Obviously if a person finds it irritating they are going to avoid it. Please don't exaggerate, these articles should make our lives easier, not more complicated. Adding in distractions to the real problem with a chemical, for example pointing out that the ingredient is cheap or has another use in another industry (fabric softener), reduces my ability to focus on the real dangers.

There's another reason to avoid the chemicals... it is doubtful the water treatment plants remove them from our waste water and they flow into our rivers/streams/groundwater and oceans. Eventually we are exposed to them in our environment and what we eat and drink as well.

Generally using products with less chemicals protects you and protects the environment. We absorb allot of "stuff" through our skin, and many of these products act like estrogen in our systems and it also effects nature. Too much estrogren causes lots of hormonal problems, leading to weight gain, decreased thyroid function, prostate problems in men, hot flashes, abnormalities in fish and animals.
I have found that using Natural Choices products which are soybased and fragrance free, helps to keep us clean, but I find our shower has less soap scum buildup and we have less harsh chemicals going down into our septic system. You can even just use pure olive oil as a moisturizer, just rub in a few drops right after showering - a pure and natural solution.

Yes, they do, I don't take soy protein for that reason anymore.

In this article "Phyto Estrogen Reduce The Risk Of Certain Cancers" link:http://www.articlealley.com/article_52338_28.html, they say soy oil is not a good source of phytoestrogens.

This article also says soy oil does not contain phytoestrogens: "Phytoestrogens cause Breast Cysts" link:http://www.nobreastcyst.com/phyto.html. I realized that lavender oil is bad, and that oregano can counteract natural progesterone. So be careful with using products with lavender oil in them
