Whenever we travel or my two year old Izzy goes off with his manny (read: Jedi trainer, once a week) for the day, we always pack To-Go Ware. That way we can make him both cold and warm food and the little man can get nourished. I'm a big fan of To-Go Ware, many of their products are made by WEAVE, an income generation project on the Thai-Burma border. I've have also been using their bamboo utensils for years.

I was shopping online for holiday gifts at Katie's Caring Gifts. I found a lightweight 2-tier food carrier made out of stainless steel. You can carrier either hot or cold food in it. And, it comes with a removable plate. If I were working in a office or back in school full-time, I'd order a To-Go Ware 2-Tier Food Carrier for transporting my lunches, in a nanosecond. How convenient for picnics and when taking food to a small gathering of friends. A plastic-free product. Katie's Caring Gifts also sells a cloth-wrapped bamboo utensil set - a nice companion gift.

Plastic is not sensible or chic to eat out of. Glass is often inconvenient and heavy. I've been using stainless steel carrying containers for years!! When I was living in Taiwan, all of us carried our lunches in metal boxes. You can find all sorts of styles and dimensions to fit your needs. Now, many years later, they are just catching on in the U.S. among the eco-conscious. They are easy to clean and sterilize. Steel will not leach toxins into your food or hold stains like plastic.

For the past month, I have faithfully been using my Stainless Steel Food Carrier in the heart of New York City! I made a commitment that I would never use another wasteful styrofoam container to carry take out food or left overs. What a life change this has been!
In the beginning I had to overcome some challenges. The food carrier is large and bit bulky, so I had to find a larger bag that would fit my laptop, my purse and work out clothes. Then I had to ask restauranteurs if they would pack my food in the food carrier. For the first week, I was confronted with resistance. But I found that I simply had to take my "food business" elsewhere, and only eat at places which would allow me to use my food carrier.
Being a bit of a fashionista, carrying a food carrier seems antithetical to the image of a fast-forward moving New Yorker. But quite the contrary, I have also found support from waitresses and friends who marvel at my endeavor.
Now I realize that the food carrier is a great piece of investment for myself, planet and people. People love good change, and I find that it is wonderful to exchange with others when I share what I am trying to do with just one stainless steel food carrier.
